"Morning sweetie! Happy Valentine's day!!" Clay muttered a few curses and squinted. The whole room was decorated in pink and red hearts. He suddenly remembered his mom was there and immediately smiled.

"Happy Valentine's day." He muttered half-heartedly.

"Breakfast is waffles and bacon when you want it." She left, and Clay immediately groaned and rolled over.

The worst holiday was here. It's all about love and commitment when, maybe, in reality, it's just pain and hurt. Getting rejected over and over. Making a commitment at the altar that doesn't ever really last. Having kids and pretending you love them. Love is just a stupid word for I used to care about you. It's all bullshit.

He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stretched before standing up and walking groggily to the living room. The sun was shining bright through the windows and it all made it more depressing honestly. He made a promise to himself that he was gonna get this all over with as soon as possible. No feelings, no pain. Right?

Wait.

Maybe it didn't have to be depressing. He smiled and quickly ate all of his food, almost tripping on his way to put the plate on the counter then quickly rushing to his room. Using the hearts on the walls and a pencil, he had it. The perfect way to get at least a little fun out of today. He put on some jeans and a sweatshirt and shoved the card in his pocket.

"Bye mom!"

"Bye sweetie."

He rushed out the door and practically ran to school. Which of course, made him ridiculously out of breath when he got to the front steps.

"Dude you look like you just ran a mile here." Nick laughed, and Clay chuckled with him while still
catching his breath.

"Are you still boycotting Valentine's Day? No change of mind or-"

Before Nick could finish, Clay pulled the card out of his pocket and held it out, it being eagerly grabbed almost instantly.

"Dear George-"

"SHUT UP- we need to get it into his locker."

They both hurried inside and nearly ran down the Junior hall.

"It's 185 right?"

"I think so."

"You know his combo too?"

"Duh"

Clay stopped at George's locker and started spinning the dial aggressively.

"What'd the locker ever do to you?" Nick laughed and Clay smirked, opening up the locker and sighing in relief. He stuck the note right next to a picture of the two of them, and closed it slowly.

"Okay, let's go before he gets here." They both- again- ran down the hall and back downstairs to the main area.

"Shit- he's here." Clay turned and saw the red car pull up to the school, his cute- WAIT NO WHY DID HE THINK THAT- okay not cute but like, cute in a George way because George is short and funny right- friend get out of the car.

"You're staring~"
"Wha- shut up Nick."

They both leaned against the wall and pretended to be talking about homework when George walked into the building. He eagerly waved at both of them, his brown eyes glistening as the lights reflected off of them. Clay's stomach flipped- but in a friend way obviously. He walked up to them, and Clay couldn't help but stare as George brushed his hair out of his face.

"What?" George smiled, and at this point he was getting dizzy.

"Nice shirt." He played it off cool. George looked down and tilted his head.

"You bought it for me, remember?"

"Yeah I know that."

He looked away to hide the warmth flooding his face.

Love is pain and hurt, it's all bullshit. He repeated to himself.

The whole conversation he just spaced out. No feelings were allowed. Especially not for his best friend. His short, cute, funny, kind-

The bell rang and automatically he turned around and started walking down the hall. It was like he was on auto-drive, like he was just sitting behind the wheel while his brain did the work. He opened his locker, put away his bag and grabbed his binder, then shut it and turned around.

George was opening his locker. With every turn of the wheel the world seemed to spin even more until Clay was suddenly standing with Nick behind George and waiting for the locker to click.

This was a horrible idea. What if George thought it was real? What if he got rejected? What if everyone else thought it wasn't a joke? What if he thought it wasn't a joke? How was he going to-

Click.
