Jason did his best to ignore the butler as he uneasily dusted the large dining room that they both knew he's already done before and after breakfast. But the British man seemed to purposely be taking his time dusting the room and act if the room wasn't used just earlier that day but for weeks instead.
Huffing out a third frustrated breath in the last five minutes seemed to gain the older man's attention and end his ploy of fake cleaning. School books and homework that he'd already long since completed and was hoping to use the empty room to gain a few private moments to catch his thoughts. He hoped with laying his finished homework on the table in front of him would keep others away, but that plan seemed to have failed him.
"Is everything alright, younger master?" Alfred kindly asked as he held his arms crossed behind his back and looked towards the youngest tenant.
"It's school" Jason confessed for the first time since his problem has been troubling him for the past three weeks since he and Dick had started Gotham academy. Both been living with Bruce for a full month now and gaining both a new home and family for themselves.
"Has something happened?" Alfred asked with his average straight face but a concern crease between his eyebrows as he slowly strolled towards him.
"Dick hasn't made any friends. It's stupid since he's such a friendly idiot and a really caring guy. He should be well liked but whenever he tries to talk with his classmates or get along, they reject him. He deserves friends" Jason grumbled back with a deep and troubled frown pulling on his lips while he leaned back in his chair. Glaring at his scrunched-up fists on his thighs as he remembers how the other students treat Dick like he was carrying the plague.
"I hear younger master Richard is rather happy spending his lunch time with you. He likes eating with you" Alfred commented honestly as he came to a stop behind the tucked in chair beside where the boy sat. He's often heard Dick talk about his lunch time spent with his favourite person and hearing over how each other's day had been like so far.
"But he shouldn't have to be stuck with me. I knew the other kids would pick on me for being a street rat, but Dick doesn't belong to be picked on too. He act's it's okay and pretends he doesn't hear what they call him or what they say behind his back, but I know he's sad" Jason snapped back in frustration and worried as he stared at a random spot on the wall opposite, not ready to see the expression the man beside him might be wearing. He knew Dick was happy eating lunch with him, but he also knew Dick deserved to have friends and not be treated so poorly by their fellow students.
"Children can be cruel" Alfred admitted with a sad nod, knowing that'd be one thing that never changes no matter how much time might pass.
"I tried getting along with my own classmates, but I only end up getting in a fight with them. I tried fitting in with this fancy life, but I don't belong here. I knew we shouldn't have came here" Jason sighed in defeat and feeling as if moving here was a huge mistake all along. Feeling as if he'd never be welcomed and not wanting Dick to start feeling the same.
"Master Jason! Don't ever say such a mistruth again. You belong with this family, and we are glad to have you with us. Children are merely foolishly and have yet to taste the real world like you have at such an early age. Don't take their words to heart. Both you and Master Richard belongs to this manor, and I won't see it any other way" Alfred raised his voice in disapproval over the boy's tone and thoughts before calming his tone and placing a reassuring hand on the boy's shoulder. Speaking to Jason as if he was both a child and an adult at the same time, knowing he'd be able to handle to understand his words.
