Around seven, Beckett comes and gets me. "It's time for supper." He tells me.
"They sent you and not Dylan?"
"I'm closer than Dylan is."
"They could send me the time themselves if I had a phone."
"They don't think that's a good idea. At least not until it's been announced that you're back. They're worried about a slip-up."
"What if something happens and I need to contact someone?"
"That's highly unlikely. If you're not here, I'm supposed to be very nearby. Even when you're here I'm usually nearby." Beckett says. I really just want a phone. It's not even like I want to talk to people, I just like it as a safety net.
"We should go down to supper before we end up being late," I tell him.
"Yeah, we probably should." He says taking a step back, probably happy that I dropped the phone thing.
We go down to the dining room, which I have finally figured out how to get to on my own.
"Ah, there you two are," Mom says as we walk in. We sit down next to each other. Dylan is already here so they're waiting on us. We pass around the food and start to fill out plates. "How was the art store, dear?" Mom asks.
"It was, uh- it was good." Right up until I brought up Beckett doing his job. I should have just let it be.
"That's good, what did you get."
"Just a sketch pad and some pens."
She nods. "Well, I wanted both of you here because we should talk about what's coming up. It's been a while since we've eaten with you Beckett, dear." He smiles at her.
"Your siblings Kale and Evie will be home for Christmas."
"Along with your grandmother," Dad adds
"Yes, and my mother will also be here."
"She is?" Daylan asks, not sounding happy.
"She always comes to Christmas; this shouldn't be a surprise to you Daylan." Mom tells him.
"She insults everything I do. Why do we keep inviting her here?"
"She's trying to give you advice and while it's not always good, she's trying to help."
"I don't see why I can't be in comfortable clothes if no one except you guys are going to see me."
"You're going to give your sister the wrong idea about her and she still holds the title of Queen Mother."
Daylan looks at me, "Granny might be Queen Mother, but that doesn't mean that she isn't crazy."
"Daylan, she is still your grandmother. William, a little help would be nice."
"Your grandmother is a perfectly nice woman," Dad says.
I look at Beckett, but his face is neutral.
"So, you'll be able to meet the rest of your family, they're very excited to meet you."
I nod and smile. Three people one of which doesn't sound very great. That makes me nervous more than anything.
"Beckett, you'll have the week of Christmas off to spend with your family."
"Thank you, sir," Beckett says looking at my father.
