They had always hated each other.

From the moment they were forced to be near each other by their families as it had been for centuries before. It was typical for pure-bloods to socialise with 'their own'.

Two sides of the same coin.

The Black heir and the Malfoy Heiress.

They both knew their worth. Determined, cunning, ambitious... the list could go on. The only people they ever listened to was their parents but make no mistake, if you crossed either of them, you would end up with a horrific fate.

Regulus Black. The son of Orion and Walburga Black, cousins, which wasn't out of the ordinary for pureblood's.

He had an older brother, Sirius. They were as close as two brothers would be, always terrorising their family and causing mayhem. The abuse from their parents never stopped them, until Sirius had formed friendships elsewhere. The Marauders. After that he was subsequently burned from the family tapestry after he had come to believe that muggle-borns deserved to be equal to pureblood's.

After he ran away from home at sixteen, leaving his fifteen year old brother to fend for himself against their parents, they never spoke again. Regulus got the message after trying once or twice and receiving the cold shoulder from Sirius.

After he came to terms with the facts his brother no longer wanted anything to do with him, Regulus turned to his cousin, Bellatrix.

Whispering all the right things into his head on top of the newfound vendetta against the Marauders, he went to the Dark Lord just a year after Sirius stranded him. Becoming one of the youngest death eaters at the age of sixteen he had become a new type of evil.

Meaningless fighting, torture and even murder had become his new scapegoat. Instead of finding solace in his brothers banter after harsh actions from their parents, he now turned to violence.

No one would ever purposefully aggravate Regulus Black, in fear of the monster he was becoming. It was rumoured he was turning just as crazy as his cousin, Bellatrix.

The only time you would find the Black heir in a sensible mood was near his other cousin, Narcissa. She had always been the light of his life, the only person to ever be able to reason with the boy and bring him to a sensible understanding.

Narcissa was the only person in the whole world who understood the pressures of their family, how insane one could go under the bone crushing expectations of a family as famous as the Black's.

She had been the one to save him from doing anything completely reckless, the one to make him stop and think instead of wreaking absolute havoc in a fit of rage. Most people believed she was the only reason he hadn't ended up in Azkaban.

If it wasn't for Narcissa, Regulus would well and truly be a lost cause.

He had always admired how much self control Mara Malfoy had. She had defied her parents again and again even after her older brother was tempted by Voldemort.

Mara never cared for what her parents believed in, she never cared about blood purity and had always gone by her own instincts. Abraxas and Lyra Malfoy knew their daughter would never listen to word they would say ever since her first word being 'no'. As proud as they were to have a strong willed daughter, they had always wished she could be as easily as moulded as Lucius was.

If you had looked up the definition of a high school mean girl, a picture of Mara would be slap bang in the middle of that page. She barely cared for anyone other than herself, some people would label her as borderline psychopathic at times.

She thought the ideal pure blooded witch was a disgusting concept. Marry who your parents wish, do well in school and never have a strand of hair out of place. Push out as many heirs as you can for your husband and stay at home all day with the children.

Never.

You can see how the two had clashed.

As violent as Regulus was he tried to hard to please his parents. As chaotic as Mara was, she would never listen to the demands of others.

Regulus would pull at Mara's hair as toddlers, throw food at her when they would bring families together to dine with each other. Launch mug at her face when they would be out playing in the garden together. But she had obviously given as much as she took.

Slyly ripping whole chapters out of the boys books, tripping him as he ran through the halls with his friends and even sabotaging him to the point he would be blamed for the vandalism of family portraits.

As ideal as it would be for the two families to have them marry, they all knew it wouldn't happen, so instead they betrothed the more pliable children. Narcissa and Lucius.

Regulus Black was forced to follow his parents thoughts of blood purity whereas Mara constantly ignored her parents pleading for her to join him.

Two sides of the same coin.

They had always hated each other, but that was only the start of their story.
