The Maesters and Archmaesters of Oldtown chronicle this as one of the longest and bloodiest battles in Westerosi history, for many a man fell: by sword, by fire, or by horse, men were slain in the thousands.

As such, there is rarely a reliable account of how it played out. Songs will be sung, to be sure, ballads made that can only guess at what happened upon that watery battlefield.

We must turn to their lyrical prowess, now, to recount the day that would decide the future of the Seven Kingdoms.

In the day's unforgiving sun, Prince Rhaegar led his armies to battle upon horseback. Thousands of men marched at his back. The bannermen of his house marched at his sides, the three-headed dragon, blood red upon ashen black, reared fiercely as it flapped in the wind.

He was donned in raven black armour embellished with glistening red rubies upon his breastplate and a helm designed after the fashion of a dragon's head covered his face. It was a glorious suit. And as he sat upon his horse, silent, assertive in the manner with which he carried himself, the leal men marching behind him drew confidence from him.

The Targaryen soldiers slowly ground to a halt as he pulled on the reins of his black stallion. The prince's eyes quinted as he looked on at the valley before him.

On the other side of the Trident, the yellow banners of the Baratheon stag flew high and mighty. Through the visor of his dragon-winged helm, prince Rhaegar could faintly make out the silhouette of his cousin, clad in steel armour with large, glistening antlers upon his helm. He sat upon a noble steed, his warhammer already in hand. It was a tight grip, that much he could see, the anger coursing through it no doubt aimed at him, his retribution drawing nigh.

Rhaegar unsheathed his blade, the sound ringing shrill and resonant as a bell through the divided expanse.

He had to time everything correctly, down to the last second.

Rhaegar raised his sword above his head. The sounds of unsheathing swords emerged behind him.

The winds blew downhill, and upon them he caught the faint whiff of smoke.

With a furious battle cry, he charged.

Robert swung his warhammer above his head and his horse reared before he led the charge of his vanguard.
