Sleepy Hollow, NY , 2022
Ichabod's eyes shot open as he sat up and looked around. The last thing he remembered was falling off his horse after leaving the Van Tassel home and speaking to Baltus about marriage to his daughter, Katrina. Ichabod stood up looking around; the forest looked the same but not was so much brighter from some reason. And his horse was gone as well. He stumbled a little as he walked around trying to recall what happened. He looked down and noticed the ground had an unfamiliar paving he had never seen before; it was black with yellow lines upon it. He slowly walked looking around, noticing bright lights coming at him rather quickly. He jumped into some nearby bushes to avoid the speeding monstrosity and stared wide-eyed as it went past him. He walked out of the bushes and followed the black pavement towards the lights he was seeing. It almost looked like a city to him but far brighter, almost like daylight even though it was clearly a night sky. He kept walking towards the lights, struggling to get his eyes focused in the brightness. He finally saw a familiar sign as he kept walking: SLEEPY HOLLOW. Home has to be somewhere close by... He thought as he looked around. He couldn't even tell if he was going north or south at this point. Before he knew it, he go to a bridge and began to walk across it. As he walked, he saw bright lights coming towards him. He couldn't find anywhere to go so the only thing he could do was jump into the bridge. Then, everything went black.
A few days later, Lillian Williams sat in the psychiatry wing of the Montefiore Medical Center in Tarrytown. She pushed her glasses up on her nose as she read the files waiting for Dr. Robbins to call her and the other assistants into his office. None of the cases were anything she was particularly interested in, so she tossed the files back on the table and looked at her watch. Dr. Robbins was always late for the meetings at the beginning of the quarter to assign the assistants their research for the next 3 months. Truth be told, Lillian was not thrilled to be doing her residency in Tarrytown, but her grandmother insisted, saying it was Part of her heritage, whatever that meant. Finally, Dr. Robbins came bounding down the hallway summoning the assistants into the conference room.
Dt. Robbins: Sorry for being late. We have some interesting files this quarter for researching. But I also have a last minute entry for the picking. Male, aged 25-35, found in the Hudson River off highway 287. Seems to have amnesia, believes himself to be.... Ichabod Crane. (Lillian snorts loudly before covering her mouth and sinking into her chair, embarrassed) Comment, Miss Williams?
Lillian (clearing her throat): Ichabod Crane? Like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow?
Dr. Robbins: Are you familiar with the tale, Miss Williams?
Lillian: Sure. I mean, look where we are. It all happened right down the road right?
Dr. Robbins (cocks an eyebrow at Lillian): Well then, since you are so knowledgeable, perhaps you'd like to take this case. (He slides the file across the table and she catches it, rolling her eyes as she sits up and opens the file to start reading)
When the meeting is over, Lillian stays behind to speak to Dr. Robbins. She watches as everyone leaves.
Dr. Robbins: Did you need something Miss Williams?
Lillian: Yes, sir. Why me?
Dr. Robbins: Well, considering your fascination with the tale of the Headless Horseman, I assumed you'd enjoy the challenge. (Once the last student left, he took his glasses off and looked at her)
Lillian: But you always give me the more difficult cases. Just because we are seeing each other doesn't mean you have to single me out, Andrew.
Andrew; Lily, It makes it less obvious. I want to be sure it doesn't look like you're getting a free ride from me. (He walks over to where she's sitting and puts his head on her shoulder) we have been so careful and this quarter is the last one. We will be alright. You graduate in May and we will be colleagues instead of... this situation.
Lily: I don't know why I insisted on going to the same school as you.
Andrew: Because we wanted to give this a chance after you got out of high school. And it's going alright isn't it?
Lily (shrugs): Andrew, look. We agreed this (points between the two of them) wasn't exclusive. I really don't want to be tied down yet. I'm only 24 and you're only 28.
Andrew: Look. I know what I want. It's you. You promised you would try, ok? (Lily nods as she takes the file under her arm and he kisses her) So I will come by your place later? (Lily rolls her eyes and shrugs) Lily? (He tickles her sides and she snickers)
Lily: Fine! Gimme a few hours to visit with "Ichabod" and I'll text you later.
Lily walked out of the conference room and headed toward the elevator to head to the third floor and see this Ichabod Crane. She remembered when she was little, her granny would tell her the story of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman. Granny swore that it was a real story but had been changed up for children. But when Lily was older, Granny would tell her the "real" story. Lily's 6th great-grandmother was a woman named Katrina Van Tassel. She was supposed to marry Ichabod in 1782, but the night Ichabod came to ask her father for her hand in marriage, he left on his horse and was found three days later on a road to Tarrytown. When they found him, he had been shot and was almost dead. By the time Katrina arrived, it was too late. Katrina did the only thing she thought would make a difference; she cast a spell she had learned from her coven of witches to have him resurrected when it was the right time. Of course, Lily loved the story and thought Granny was the best teller of tales. Granny swore the women in their family had the gift Katrina had. Lily shook her head as she got off the elevator thinking about Granny's story. She went to the nurses station to find her patient and walked down the hall. She looked at the file one last time and as she opened the door, she had this sudden rush of fire through her stomach. It almost floored her. She inhaled sharply and stepped into the room to meet her patient.
