TW tiny mention of s/h
Basil woke up at 10:00 A.M. He didn't get much sleep last night, as he was overthinking everything he possibly could involving Sunny. He couldn't wrap his head around any of it. And he felt so guilty for even liking him. Basil knew it was selfish, well.. he didn't know why but he felt selfish to like his best friend this much. To love his best friend. Knowing he probably loves someone else, and won't love him the same way. That hurt Basil's heart, it felt as if it could've cracked. His stomach hurt so badly from overthinking, he couldn't bring himself to eat. He wanted to see Sunny, though. Of course he did. Knowing why he wanted to see him, he didn't want to anymore. But it was the weekend, and Mari had a picnic ready. So early in the morning, but Basil's birthday is only a few days away. Mari had a plan to make lots of flower themed cookies. Just designs on the cookies. Mari's baking work was always perfect.
Basil got dressed and walked to the park. On the way there he scratched at his arm, not hard enough to leave a mark, just to take his mind off of thinking so much about what he's been worried about. He wore a T-shirt today so he was worried the others might see, but it's not too obvious, just a bit red.
When he got there, it was just Mari and Aubrey. Sunny was sleeping in, he usually does. This helped Basil feel a bit more relieved, all though he was kind of disappointed. Aubrey was helping set up the hide-out, she was decorating it with stuff Basil liked. They were going to add more decorations till it reached his birthday. Aubrey noticed he had come already and was excited. "Basil!~!" Aubrey shouted, signalling him to get closer. She hadn't seen him this early in awhile, and was glad for it to be some Basil and Aubrey time for a bit. Mari was still trying to set the decorations up, and didn't want to bother Aubrey as she rambled about a new game she's gotten on her gameboy. It was Kel's.. but she said not to tell him that. Basil was happy to talk to Aubrey one on one, but he was troubling to focus. Aubrey noticed and felt as if she was talking his ear off. "I'm sorry, are you okay Basil? Am I bothering you?" Basil gasped and apologized. "No, no! You're not. You'd never bother me! I'm sorry. I've just been distracted lately." "With what? Are you alright?" She got worried, and put her head down. "You know, I've been worried about you. I think Mari already told you, but you seem like you haven't been yourself. " she looked at Mari, and Mari turned her back to look at Aubrey aswell. Mari gave her a worried smile and then continued. "Ah.. Please don't be worried about me." Basil sighed and looked at the ground, a trail of ants searched for scraps in the grass. "It's nothing, just..." Aubrey admired at the ants aswell. "Just what?" she looked back at him. He crossed his arms and looked at her, she had a yellow bow on today in her hair, and it was centered instead of to the right.
"Um... Well.. H-how do you know if you like someone?" Both Mari and Aubrey perked their heads up and looked at him. Mari got a little embarrassed because she didn't want them to know she was eavesdropping, but both Basil and Aubrey giggled and Basil nodded reassuringly. Aubrey got a sparked in her eyes, "Oh, who who who?! You like someone?" her and Mari were clearly excited to hear this. I guess they don't have anyone else but each other to talk to about boys. "I-I still don't know if I like him or no-" Basil cut himself off and clapped his hands over his mouth. He let out a yelp as he did in embarrassment for outing himself. Both Mari and Aubrey giggled at Basil, but also smiled with an sympathetic look. "Oh, Basil. It's okay. It doesn't matter what gender you like, it just matters to me if you love them or not. We both just want you to be happy, don't be ashamed." Mari expressed. Aubrey reassured me aswell, "We would never judge you for who you are! Don't be scared. We love you, and I bet we'll love whoever you do, too! Anyways, it's nice to be able to talk to someone else about this stuff. " Aubrey definitely wasn't the most feminine girl, she doesn't like "girly" things such as dresses and never cared for dolls or anything like that. But Mari still enjoys talking about these topics so she does, too. Plus, it's not necessarily girly to talk about your feelings.
"But, for your question." Mari was thinking on what to say, she sat down with us and flattened the picnic blanket more. "Does he make you happy?" Basil exclaimed with no hesitation- "Of course he does!" Both Mari and Aubrey smiled at me. "Then that's a great start! Do you feel like you can be yourself around him, without being judged?" Aubrey continued off of Mari. ".. Well, I would hope I wouldn't be judged. But yes. " Mari fixed her position, she was sitting holding her knees up, with her arms resting around them, then changed to a neater criss-cross position. "It's hard to tell when you truly love someone, but I believe if you're questioning it, then you might. Especially if this is what has been bothering you." Aubrey agreed with Mari. Basil looked back at the ground, he searched for where the ants had gone, but found himself following a trail of ants, and they were in the picnic basket. Basil began to mention it, "Hey-!" Kel and Hero came out from the trees while pushing a very sleepy Sunny in front. Mari ran up to Hero, "Wow! It's 12:00. What happened?" Kel interrupted him, "Well *someone* really didn't want to wake up! We practically had to drag him out of bed. I know he's always sleepy, but c'mon!" Aubrey noticed the ants and quickly killed all of them, luckily they hadn't gotten into any of the food except some crumbs from previous picnics left in the basket, so it was alright.
Everyone sat down to begin eating. Mari pulled out the flower themed desserts, cookies! Shaped and frosted like gladiolus! Also known as a "sword flower". Aubrey got excited, "You told me these reminded you of me, remember? I picked them out because Mari was struggling for a first choice." Aubrey nudged at Basil's shoulder. It's nice to see how much effort they put into Basil. He got his mind taken off of all his worries for awhile, but Sunny sitting next to him and beginning to read the book he recommended didn't help too much. While Basil was really happy to be with his friends, his stomach began to twist again. He couldn't bring himself to eat anymore cookies. Basil got up and dusted himself off. It was only 1:00P.M but he didn't want to worry anyone. "Wait, dude, where are you going?" Kel got up aswell while talking with food in his mouth. "Oh, um, remember? My grandma has been taking me to lots of places, as some teaser gifts for my actual birthday. I was meant to meet her back home a bit ago, so I really have to head back. I'm so sorry!" Basil apologized profusely as tears began to swell up in his eyes, he felt so guilty for abandoning his friends like this, and so selfish for doing it just to not hurt himself. But, he was also doing it to not make them worry. He began to walk home while he heard the group mumble "Is he okay?" , "Basil.."
