(cynthia brooks pov !!)
"cynnnn!" my mom yelled from across the house, making me jump.
i take the phone off my ear, "just a sec momma!" i reply.
i slowly put the phone back on my ear, waiting for my mom to storm into my room for telling her to wait 'just a sec'.
"sorry, you still up for dinner tonight?" i apologize.
"mhm. just make sure that we ain't on grease territory. last time that happened me and mikey got in a fight." my boyfriend said, obviously sounding distracted.
"mkay... well, my mom's calling me, think i gotta go, but i'll see you later?" i said hastily.
"for sure. love ya, bye babe."
"byebye." i sighed, hanging up the phone.
my boyfriend, rick mclean, is one of the more popular socs. known for his good looks and charming personality, at times. he's friends with the other jocks like michael fuller and bob sheldon. he has icy blue eyes that could be soft one moment, sharp and cold the next. dirty blonde hair and muscles. a tattoo on his left arm. he's probably with his friends, too busy to talk, i think to myself."
i quickly skip down the long hall, apologizing to my mom who was waiting for me.
"sorry ma... what'd you need?" i asked, out of breath.
"your father and i are going out to dance later tonight, and i was wondering if you wanted to tag along. you used to love to dance as a little girl!" my mom replies with a grin.
i would feel bad if i said no to my mothers smiling face. i haven't been out with them in a while. i didn't want to keep ricky waiting, but i'd catch up with him later.
"okay..! um, i made plans with rick later, so i might leave early if that's alright with you.."
"ooooh rick? your boyfriend hmmm..? okay okay, don't have too much fun!" my mom teases.
"mom.." i whisper, blushing.
my mom laughs as she turns to walk back to her bedroom.
brushing off the embarrassment i felt, i hurried to my room to get ready for the busy night.
-
a full face of heavy makeup and a fancy outfit later, i was dressed to dance...
i turn off my record player and twirl around in the mirror before opening my bedroom door.
i slowly make my way down the staircase, trying my hardest not to break my ankle in these heels.
"someone looks awfully pretty tonight!" my dad looks at me as if i were walking down the aisle.
"relax dad, it's not my wedding day." i joke.
he opens the front door for me, laughing as i struggled to walk down the front steps.
i hop into the back seat of my family's tan mustang, making sure not to close the door on the big gown. the engine starts up, and we were on our way.
as we drive, i gaze out the window looking at the run down city, fallen leaves, and old rusty cars. leather and jean jackets catch my eye, and i wonder what it was like to be a greaser. how is it like on the east side? do they care about their popularity and reputation? do they worry about being out late? are they wild and crazy like how the socials make them seem?
i felt guilty. it wasnt right that i have all of this. loving parents, friends, a boyfriend. some people dream about having this life.
my answer to these questions would come to me later.
as we pull into the parking lot full of cars, i hear muffled voices and music coming from the busy room. my dad opens the car door for me, and we head inside.
as we walk through the doors of the country club, my mom was already saying her 'hellos' to her friends, my dad was going to get a drink. that left me to go find friends from school and make conversation until 9:00.
i search the big room for any familiar faces. my eyes land on red hair and a bright smile. sherri valance, who was also on the cheerleading team. i make my way through the bustling crowd to where cherry and the other cheer girls were sitting.
"hey cynnie!" that was the nickname cherry has called me since we were younger.
"hey cher! this seat taken?" i say, pulling out an empty chair.
"no, all yours." she replies, with a wide grin. "so whatcha up to? here with your folks? the girls and i wanted to make the most of our last days of fall break."
fall break. i was dreading going back to prison- i mean school.
"yeah i've been sorta busy lately, and my mom invited me here."
"cool! just like when we were younger."
cherry laughs at the memory."you wanna get some lemonade?" i say standing up from my chair.
"sure!" she says, following behind.
we push through all of the people dancing, making sure to say 'scuse me, sorry,' to everyone along the way.
we made our way to the dessert table that had of all sorts of sweets on it.
"sooo," cherry begins, while pouring herself a glass of the juice. "marcia and i are going to the drive-in tomorrow, you wanna come?"
"alright! what time?"
"i'll pick you up 'round 8, cool?"
i nod. they usually go to the nightly double, because it was never too crowded on weekdays, and ticket prices were lower.
i grab a cookie from one of the platters, and we head back towards our table.
my dad spots me in the crowd, and approaches me and cherry.
"hello girls! sherri, its been so long since i've seen you two together!" my dad exclaims.
"hi mr. b! i know, it seems like ages since we've hung out." cherry smiles looking over at me.
we would always have sleepovers at my house when we were in elementary school.
i smile back, and take a small bite of my cookie. an upbeat song starts to play, and my dad asks me for a dance.
i accept, and wave goodbye to cherry.
he takes my hand, and we dance our way to the center of the crowd. i awkwardly smile at my dad because i haven't danced in so long. i was sure i looked dumb.
"another round, it's party time!" a wasted adult from the table over yells at the bartender.
what time was it? i look over my my tall fathers shoulder at the clock and it reads 9:34 in big bold numbers. shit. i was supposed to meet rick at 9.
im sure he wont be too upset?
