"I love you."

In a span of seconds it felt like all the fresh air had been knocked out of her lungs. It felt like the world was spinning beyond control. She replayed the words over and over again in her head. Her eyes connected with his eyes only finding sincerity and hopefulness she knows that she could crush in seconds.

Her heart fell heavy knowing she would be the one to bring a burden to his heart. She wanted to protect him and be his knight in shining armor. But how could she when she was the evil witch he should be protected from. After a few seconds of silence, his eyes started resembling of falling stars. As another second passes, another star dies and another ounce of hope crushed. Eyes once filled with hopefulness was now hanging on a thread from heartbreak.

He looked at her tearfully, his heart beating faster and the feeling of rejection enveloping him. "You don't love me, do you?"

Oh, how she wanted to deny it and say that she loved him with all her heart. She wanted to see the smile on his face, his worries and sadness pushed aside as he'd have his fairytale ending. But she couldn't, because deep in her heart she knows she doesn't.

"I love you, I really do." Her voice cracked. The voice in her head telling her the harsh truth that she was lying. For it all took was for him to look in her eyes and see that it was nothing short of little white lies.

She looked at him sadly, finally voicing out what she has been protecting him from. "Just not in the way you want me to."
