It felt like at least another lifetime before I woke up in that damn jail cell again. Opening my eyes, I tried to sit up and move my arms, but to my horror, I was chained to the bed. I attempted to pull on the chains, but to no avail. Looking around the room, my eyes settled on the angel who had attempted to talk to me before I had broken out of here.
'Why am I here?' I growled at him, pulling further on the chains.
'I don't want to hurt you, but I will need your cooperation if we are going to remove the Angel from your body and mind.'
'I'm not giving you a damn cent of my cooperation, you bastard, if you don't let me see my husband first.' He abruptly stood.
'Very well. I'll let you see him. You get five minutes.' He unlocked my chains and let me sit on the bed, still restrained by one hand to the bed. 'If anything should go wrong in here, I will know immediately and I will act accordingly.' He left the room and a second later, the door opened, Bucky stepping into the room. The door shut behind him with a loud bang that echoed through the room.
'Hey,' he said. I glared at him.
'I trusted you, and you hurt me,' I snapped. He sat down in the chair opposite me.
'I know I did, and I'm really sorry. But I'm here now.'
'Sorry doesn't cut it, James.'
'I know it doesn't.'
'Then prove that you're actually sorry.'
'Look, I know it was messed up what I did. I asked you to trust me, you did, and then I hurt you. That was messed up. I know that. But I'm trying to help you. Me and the Angel - we're both trying to help you. The Angel of Death is hurting you. She's making you do horrible things, commit these awful crimes. She is hurting people in your body. Do you seriously not see how that can affect you, or anyone else?'
'She hurt people?' I asked, swallowing back a lump in my throat. 'How many?' James was silent. 'How many, James?'
'Too many to count. Way too many. Probably a good 50-something dead. Several more injured.'
'I - I did all that? I swore to myself after HYDRA... never again. I let her take over my mind and control me. I - I'm a murderer, James. I can't stand to face this. The guilt - it's too much.' I began to sob, and James sat on the bed, pulling me into his embrace. '
'Hey, hey, it's okay. It's okay. You're safe now.' I sobbed, and through tears, I said,
'I'll do it. I want her gone. Please, just take this away from me. Please.'
'It's okay. It's okay. We'll do it soon, I promise, doll. She'll be gone soon.' The door squeaked open again, and the Angel stepped through.
'Your time is up, Sargeant Barnes.' He stood, peeling himself away from me, and turning to the Angel.
'She's ready. She wants the Angel gone.'
'Okay,' the Angel said with a pensive look. 'We'll start first thing in the morning. Get some sleep, Adelaide. You're going to need it.' The two stepped out, and the door clanged behind them, sealing the finality of my imprisonment. My heart dropped instantly with the feeling of dread.
