A Few Years After

"Umekiri, that is not a toy," Mina scolded as she uncoiled her young daughter's hand from the scabbard in her lap. Mina Asotori and her husband, Okamori, had just moved into this quiet neighborhood in Tokyo after retiring from their lifelong careers. Being a jujutsu sorcerer while raising a child had been too dangerous, and despite their high rankings and unexpendable skills, starting a family had been their goal once they had finally gotten married.

Unfortunately for them, their child has proven to be as difficult as some of the cursed spirits they fought. Mina placed the old sword and scabbard on the floor next to the box it had been stored in for the move and picked up her fidgety child. Umekiri had always been curious, and once she learned how to crawl, she had explored every inch of their house that she could. Mina and Okamori had to be extra careful in making sure their home was toddler proof.

"Let's get you dressed so we can go grab a bite to eat," Mina cooed as she padded up the stairs. "Daddy will meet us, too."

Umekiri squealed as she played with a lock of her mother's black hair that dangled free from her bun. Since retiring from hunting curses, Umekiri's parents needed to rely on normal jobs to live. Okamori found a job working in an office setting that allowed him to provide a comfortable living for his small family. Once Umekiri is a bit older, Mina plans to find something for herself. But for now... she enjoys spending time with their rambunctious toddler.

Half an hour later, Mina, Okamori, and Umekiri were seated at an outdoor table in a restaurant. The sky above was a beautiful blue, the temperature pleasant. A light wind danced along the table, the napkins and umbrella swaying.

Her parents were talking, but Umekiri couldn't understand their babbling. It didn't matter what they said anyway, because she wasn't even listening. Her attention was set on the birds flying and hopping around the seating area. They swooped around, fluttering away when they got too close to a person. Umekiri wanted to touch one, they looked so cuddly she thought. Especially that other one that landed next to the plant behind the table next to her father. It stared at her, a curious expression on its tan face. With big round eyes, it looked like one of her stuffed toys. Umekiri laughed and reached her arms out to get it. But whatever contraption she sat in was keeping her from reaching any further, so she curled her small hands into fists and pounded on her prison.

"What is it darling?" Okamori asked, a smile on his face at his daughter's antics.

Her mother turned to the direction that her daughter can't stop looking, a frown tugging at the corners of her lips. "Oh, a fly head."

"Huh," Okamori chuckled. "Well now we know she can see curses at least."

"Indeed," Mina responded. Umekiri thought that her mother might get the funny looking bird for her when she raised a hand. Instead, her mother slashed her palm through the air and the bird dispersed as if it were made of smoke. And then it was gone.

Umekiri started to cry. She wanted that bird to cuddle, but her parents didn't seem to care. Whatever it was that her mother did sent the bird away and Umekiri somehow knew it wasn't coming back. Her mother tried to soothe her, but she wasn't having it.

She continued to cry, even knowing that her parents were getting flustered. Her eyes were blurry with tears and everything appeared distorted. She almost wanted to laugh but she wasn't done crying yet. Nothing would make her stop, she would fall asleep crying if she had to. She didn't even stop when the waiter came over with plates of food. Her parents just looked at the other adult with apologetic expressions.

Umekiri took a deep breath, readying for another cry when something caught her eye. Something that made her tears stop falling. A man was standing on the other side of the road. Umekiri is sure that she has never seen him before, especially since this place was so new. But he looked like she should know him. Maybe it was because his hair matched half of hers. It was bright white in color, which matched the right side of her own hair. The man wore a black outfit and small black glasses that covered his eyes. He seemed to be looking right at her and her parents.

The man took a step off the sidewalk and started crossing the road heading right for their table. Neither her parents seemed to notice him, or her sudden quiet. Umekiri wasn't entirely sure, but she could have sworn she has seen this man in her dreams. Except she was never in those dreams, only someone who looked like her but much older. She couldn't ever understand anything about those images that played in her mind when she slept.

"Okamori and Mina Asotori," the man had said once he stepped onto the sidewalk where the restaurant's outdoor seating was. "I didn't think that the next time you two stopped in Tokyo would be after you retired. Though it looks like you still haven't completely quit."

Okamori stood up, a grand smile on his face. "Satoru Gojo." The two men clasped hands and Umekiri watched in wonder. "Did you send that fly head?"

The white haired man laughed and glanced at Mina. "It's good to see you both."

"Likewise, Satoru." Mina tilted her head to her daughter. "Satoru, this is our daughter, Umekiri."

Umekiri watched as the white haired man walked over to her and knelt down. "Hello there." Umekiri reached out and touched his head, running a little finger along the hair that is so similar to hers. He chuckled at her curiosity. "You have quite the interesting hair style too, you know." He turned his attention to Okamori and Mina again. "Did you dye it?"

Okamori lifted a brow. "Dye our toddler's hair? No. She was born like that."

"I quite love it," Mina chimed, a sparkle in her brown eyes. The same colored eyes that her father has too. Umekiri always loved looking at her reflection in the mirror. She found it fascinating how different she looked from her parents. Umekiri shared none of her mother's and father's all dark hair and brown eyes.

"Me too," Satoru said, his gaze flicking between her eyes. He stood after a moment and turned to look at her father. "I was hoping we could catch up, Okamori."

Umekiri's father sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "If by catching up, you mean anything but talk about jujutsu. Or curses."

Satoru held his hands up, palms facing Mina and Omakori. "Of course, I wouldn't dream of it."

"Why don't I believe you, Gojo. I'll bring something home for dinner." Umekiri's father kissed Mina on the forehead before kneeling at Umekiri's chair. "I'll see you tonight, darling." He kissed the top of her head before standing and walking off with the white haired man.

Umekiri watched the white haired man walk away, still trying to figure out why he seemed so familiar.
