Gojo
Gojo walked at a leisurely pace back to campus. The streets are filling despite the cold temperatures, so he had switched his mask out for sunglasses. His bright white hair fell over his face, making him think of Umekiri. He had little doubt that she wouldn't end up in the school, whether it be for the rest of this year or starting next year. He already had a handful of students this year, but one more--especially Ume--wouldn't be too difficult.
He had debated with himself whether or not he should trail behind her as she made her way home. But he figured that she always knew when he did that, so he decided to trust that she would make it back okay. After all, the path to her house wasn't where any known curses liked to hang out. In that her parents made sure.
Hopefully she planned to keep her promise about talking to her parents. Or did he make her promise to only think about it? There was only so much that he could do to try to nudge her along. Sometime last summer, he had mentioned to her father about her going to the school. Okamori replied saying that if she is able to get the nerve to ask, then neither he nor Mina would get in the way, so long as it was something that she truly wanted to do. Gojo knew they would prefer she stay out of that life, but they also understood its call.
Gojo promised Okamori and Mina that he wouldn't tell their daughter of that conversation. She had to figure it out on her own, that her parents just wanted her to be confident enough with her decision.
He brought the soda in his hands to his lips, drained the rest, then tossed it in the trash bin. Often, he wondered how Ume's cursed energy would manifest, what it would look like. Would it be like hers? Umekiri looked exactly like his old friend. Her personality is a bit different, though he can see similarities. That day, twenty years ago, when he had first saw her as an infant at that restaurant... he was speechless. Losing both of his best friends on that single day had crushed him. And seeing the bright and smiling face of Umekiri stitched something back together in his heart.
It also created a web of concern. The curse users were after Rayomi for her abilities. She had, Gojo realized years later, raw powers. Almost like she was a curse herself, but he knew that she was not. Just like Umekiri is not. But Rayomi's cursed energy manifested in her at a young age, she had said once. Ume's has yet to appear. It might be a blessing, he thought, if she didn't have the same capabilities. Ray's energy could be violent and uncontrollable, often threatening those she cared about.
Gojo turned the corner and froze. There, just for a split second, he sensed something that he could never forget. His energy. The old friend of his that changed everything, chose the path of violence and destruction.
He sent his own cursed energy out around him, feeling for Geto's again. It was just the briefest amount that he sensed, but it couldn't have been a coincidence. Nor did he think that he had imagined it, even though both Geto and Rayomi were just on his mind.
If Geto found Umekiri, would he kill her too? Gojo vowed to not let that happen. To not fail a friend again.
So he ran. Strangers cursed at him as he sprinted down the slick sidewalks, following the path that his gut told him to. He still couldn't sense Geto, but something in his mind told him to start moving this way. What would he do if he ran into him? Would he be able to end his old friend's life? He couldn't the last time that he faced him.
He realized that he was running in the direction of the Asotori household. At an intersection, he stopped. If he kept going straight, he would reach Umekiri's house. But something to his right is pulling him in that direction. He turned to the right and was about to start running again when his phone rang.
Umekiri's name flashed on the screen and his heart thundered in his chest. "Umek--"
"Gojo," she sobbed on the other line, hardly even getting his name out.
"What is it? What happened?" He ran toward her house, forgetting the strangeness tugging him down that other road. Fear crept into his soul at her wracking sobs. Was Geto there? Did he find her? Images of that night all those years ago slammed into his mind. Geto with the curse users. Rayomi bleeding on the grass, a sword struck through her abdomen. A gaping hole in her chest.
"My...parents," she managed to get out. "Help."
"I'm coming Ume. I'm coming."
Neither of them hung up the phone. The sounds of her crying pushed him to run faster, almost knocking a street vendor down in the process. Now he kicked himself for not walking her home.
He reached the Asotori home and sprinted up the steps. The moment he reached the porch, he smelt the blood. There were no signs of a cursed spirit, nor that of any curse user. But when he barged into the open front door, there was a blood-covered pistol on the ground in the hall.
Umekiri's sobbing had him jumping to the doorway that led into the family room. His blue eyes widened in disbelief at the scene in front of him.
Mina and Okamori lay dead in the center of the room, furnishings pushed aside or tipped over. Broken glass is spread out by the end table. Both of their bodies have a single bullet hole, right at their hearts.
Gojo fought the urge to scream his anger and grief. Instead, he fell to Umekiri's side and placed his arms over her shuddering body. She leaned over her mother's body, who's head was to the side, blank dark eyes staring at something across the room. Her stiff arm reached for something and Gojo followed it. She was reaching for a photo of her daughter. Was that a clue? Was the person responsible for this looking for Umekiri?
"I..." Ume heaved into the silence. "I killed him..."
Gojo's heart stopped. What did she mean? Then he saw it. A person he didn't recognize, slumped against the far wall. His head had been severed from his body. A thin line charred the wall where he must have been standing, and sliced clean through it.
When Rayomi had gotten emotional, her cursed energy came out. Depending on whatever she was feeling, it would manifest differently.
Umekiri's cursed energy had manifested. He was sure of it.
