The Morning's Dusk

Chapter 17

I woke up late the next morning. Nine of us had gone (Leah, Seth, Jake, Sam, Paul, Jared, Quil, Embry, and me), which left an uneven number for rooms. I shared a huge bed with Jake and Leah insisted on staying in the room to make sure Jacob didn't try anything. When she said that, Jake had muttered, "Buzz-kill." Seth wanted to stay in the room, too. Leah made him sleep on the futon.

Sam, Paul, and Jared shared a room and Quil and Embry shared a room. I got up and walked around, looking for everyone. Seth yawned and said, "Man, my back hurts. Where is everybody?" I shrugged and answered, "I was hoping you would know." He shook his head and Leah opened the door. She said, "I got breakfast. Where's Jacob?" I replied, "I don't know." I walked back over to the bed and noticed a note on his pillow. Seth came up behind me and said, "What is it, Ness?" I grabbed the note and read it.

Renesmee, I'm pretty sure I'll regret this..but I'm headed back to Forks alone. I have to ask your dad something. He might get mad, so if I'm not back by sundown tell the wolves where I went. I love you and hope you won't miss me too much. -Jake

I groaned and said, "Great. I think I should go.." I grabbed my phone and shoved it in my pocket. I hesitated at Leah and Seth. They had a questioning expressiom on, but I waved and said in rushed voice, "Tell you about it later." And I hopped out of the 6-story-high window and landed lightly on my feet. Then I headed straight for Forks at full speed.

When I got to La Push I stopped. I could see Jake in the water. He wasn't swimming-just standing in the water. Like he did when he was nervous. I hid behind a tree and saw him run from the water, his shirt drying as he flew by me. He had gotten a few feet ahead of me and then stopped abruptly. He smelled the air and closed his eyes. "Renesmee." I thought for a moment that he had seen me, and I tried to disguise my face by putting my back to the tree and squeezing my eyes closed.

But he didn't look my way. Instead he leaned against that same tree so that we were practically back to back. He said to himself, "Wow, Jake. You're really losing it, man. Imagining her here. I wish. Her dad said she could do worse and Bells seemed relieved in a way. So, how will I ask her?" I took a deep breath and jumped out in front of him. "Ask me what?"

His eyes got huge and he said, "What're you doing here?" I said, "Read your note. Don't change the subject; answer the question, Jacob!"

He blushed and said, "I planned this completely differently." He looked me i the eye and said, "Renesmee, I've loved you since the day you were born. And we've been through so much. I don't ever want to lose you." I smiled.

He took a deep breath and got down on one knee. My breath literally stopped an he caught my hand. "Renesmee Carlie Cullen, will you marry me?"

Then everything went black.
