The next morning Daria came to pick me up like always. She was happy, the previous night’s events forgotten. She didn’t say anything, though she scowled when she saw my outfit –an A Day To Remember t-shirt, skinny jeans and my converse.
When we got into her car she finally said, “Matt stayed over last night.”
I gasped. “Did you...?” She knew what I meant and shook her head.
“We were both kind of shook up about the fire so I invited him in and he just ended up holding me until I fell asleep. Then when he tried to put me in my bed I asked him to stay with me... and he did.” She sighed dreamily. “We’re officially together now.”
I laughed and gave her a hug. She gave me a one-arm hug in return, keeping the other hand on the steering wheel.
“So... what about you?” She asked doing the eyebrow thing.
I shook my head at her smiling almost sadly. “He just came inside for a drink and then left a few minutes later.” She gave me that there’s-something-you’re-not-telling-me look.
“Really. That’s all that happened.”
We were at school at this point and it was pretty much like yesterday. There was crowd of girls all shoving there way into the school, presumably to see Kaiden.
“It looks like something’s going on...” Daria said and linked arms with me as we hurried into the school.
As we were walking into the building, I glanced sideways and paused. There was an elderly couple... Or maybe not elderly. They looked to be in their 40’s or 50’s but they walked like they were young. They were just strolling, hand in hand, down the road... and they were staring at me. The woman laughed and pushed back her long blonde hair and the man smiled. Neither took their eyes off me. Even thought they were laughing, something about them gave me goosebumps. I shook my head and followed Daria again.
Pushing our way through the crowd, we could hear Melanie shouting something. Before we could see anything however, she had stopped.
Daria and I shoved through the crowd and finally saw them. Matt, Kaiden and Melanie were all standing beside Kaiden’s locker. Melanie was glaring at Matt as Kaiden said something softly.
Daria walked up and took Matt’s hand, glaring balefully at Melanie. Kaiden stopped talking and looked at me. I smiled and he returned the gesture. Melanie made a gagging noise and stormed off.
“What was that about?” I asked Kaiden.
“She’s accusing me of starting the fire.” Matt answered.
Daria gasped. “But you didn’t. You were absolutely wonderful, going and getting Ashley like that.”
Matt just shrugged. He was quite the quiet type.
The bell rang and Matt kissed Daria goodbye and we all walked off to History together. Our teacher, Mrs. Frunklestein, was a strict lady who played favorites. Daria was one of those favorites, as she was a total History buff.
Kaiden sat next to me while Daria had to go sit toward the back. I was sitting there daydreaming when something hit my in the face. Kaiden snickered beside me and I looked down. It was a note.
Wanna go to dinner tonight?
– Kaiden
I looked up at him and he was smirking, looking devilishly handsome. I nodded.
The rest of the day seemed to pass rather quickly. Before I knew it we were at lunch.
Daria was leaning against Matt, her had on his stomach, as he leaned against the tree and Kaiden was sitting on the opposite side of them as me. It was odd. All day he had acted like he didn’t really want to get too near me. During our second class he’d offered to switch seats with Daria so that she could be nearer to me. It didn’t make any sense. Why ask me out if you don’t want to be near me?
Suddenly lunch was over and then, before long, school was too. Daria took me home and dropped me off, asking if I was okay. I nodded and forced a smile before going inside.
Then I realized something. Kaiden had never told me what time we were going to dinner.
Stupid unreliable boy.
I pulled my hair back into a clip and slipped on my favorite light, black and white jacket and lounged in the living room.
It started to get darker, and I wondered if maybe he’d purposely not give me the time. Maybe he wasn’t coming at all. Maybe he’d forgot where my house was.
As I was staring out the window, I saw a black shape move in front of it. I jumped up. It looked like a person...
Walking cautiously to the window, I peered out it. It was dark outside, the sun already set. I didn’t see anything out of place.
I turned around and almost had a heart-attack. Standing very close behind me was none other than Kaiden.
I gasped and almost fell over but he caught me and held me upright.
“Are you alright?” He asked, smirking.
I glared at him. “How’d you get in here?”
He gestured behind him. “The front door was open. I called your name but you didn’t answer so I just came to look for you.”
I narrowed my eyes suspiciously. “What were you doing out back?” I asked, pointing to the window.
“What? I wasn’t out back...” He said and I believed him. He leaned out the window, looking concerned. “Wasthere someone out here?”
I nodded... and then shook my head. “I dunno. It’s dark, maybe it was just my imagination.”
Kaiden studied me for a moment then nodded, too. He stepped back from me and gestured to the door, glancing out the window one last time. “Shall we get going then?”
I hesitated, remembering that I had been angry with him for not giving me a time. Oh, who cares, I thought nodding at him and walking with him to the car.
My eyes ran over his body, examining his outfit. He was wearing jeans and navy blue Khaki coat. He looked casual, yet like a male model for Khaki.
“I’m sorry, by the way. For not giving you a time. It completely slipped my mind.” His smile seemed genuine so I decided that I could forgive him. Just this once.
I thought we would be going to a restaurant but instead he parked along side the curb in one of the parks. I gave him a questioning look but he just smirked and got out.
I got out too and saw that he had a big picnic basket in his hand. With his free hand, he gestured to a spot under a huge tree. The park was deserted so it was quiet as I followed him over. He pulled a small blanket out of the basket and laid it out then sat down.
When I didn’t sit down beside him, he looked up at me and patted the blanket, indicating that I should sit. I slowly moved to sit beside him and he smiled and started pulling out things. He pulled out a few candles and sat them off the blanket before lighting them. He pulled out a small iPod, with speakers, and turned it on softly so that it was no more than a background noise. Then he pulled out the food.
He handed me some crackers with cheese and set out all the ingredients for sandwiches. Then he made one and handed it to me. After I took it, he made one for himself.
Slowly, I took a bite, testing it about. I wasn’t really sure what I expected, but it was good.
He smirked and took a bite of his as well.
We ate in silence for a while, just gazing around the dark park. The street lamps gave off some light but it was still dark enough to seem creepy and sinister. Suddenly my appetite gave way and I sat down the rest of the sandwich.
After a minute, I couldn’t help myself anymore. “How come you avoided me at school today?” I asked, my tone accusing.
Kaiden chuckled softly and put his sandwich done. “I wasn’t avoiding you.”
“Well you didn’t come anywhere near me. And in every class you made sure that your seat wasn’t near mine.” I paused. “You don’t just ask someone out and then not want to go near them.”
Maybe this isn’t a date. Maybe he just wanted to go somewhere for dinner and that’s why he didn’t get near me. Maybe he just didn’t want to me to think that it was a date.
He noticed that my eyebrows pulled together, forming a little indent, because I was confused. He took my hand and his thumb rubbed soothing circles on the back of it.
“Why would have done all this—” he gestured to the candles and music, “if I didn’t want to be near you?” He gave me a soft smile and I found that couldn’t look away from his eyes.
After a what seemed like an hour, he looked away. “I have something to tell you.”
My eyes swept out, over the park again. No one was there. I had the weirdest feeling of being watched, though...
Kaiden shifted his position and let go of my hand. “What is it?” I asked quietly.
“Just don’t freak out, okay?” He looked nervous. I nodded.
“See... my parents are kind of... special. In more sense than one. They’re not nice people. They’re cruel and powerful and they crave vengeance.” He licked his lips nervously and glanced around us.
“Why are you telling me that?” I asked, thoroughly confused.
He sighed and the rest rushed out so fast I almost didn’t catch it. “Becausethey’revampiresandtheywanttogetyou.”
I started laughing. A nervous, awkward laugh. Once I started it was slightly difficult to stop. Soon I was clutching my side, trying very hard to stop.
“Will you stop laughing? I’m being serious.” Kaiden snapped, giving me a frosty glare.
That sobered me up some and I hiccuped myself back to silence.
“Okay, let me get this straight. Your parents are vampires?” I had to hold back the laughter again. It was so insane.
“Not just my parents...” He said slowly.
“You’re crazy. Insane. Out of your mind.” I said, standing up.
Suddenly he was on his feet too. He grabbed my wrist, not hard enough to hurt me but enough to keep me there.
“Just here me out, okay?” He demanded. I raised my eyebrows and he proceeded. “My family is sort of royal. Well my parents and brothers are. I was disowned because I ran away. My father has a lot of power so he’s sort of in the position of a king. But they’re hunting me. And according to the prophecy–”
“Prophecy?” I barked out a laugh. “You have got to be kidding me.”
He glared at me and I fell silent again. “According to the prophecy, my parent’s youngest son–” he pointed to himself, “would meet this girl.” He pointed to me. “And they’d find a way to take down the powerful Evans family.”
“After they heard it they disowned me but made sure I was always followed. Of course, I went looking for the girl. I never found her. Until now.”
I looked at him skeptically for a moment before licking my lips again. “How do you know it’s me?” I demanded.
He looked down, then back up at me, then glanced around us again. “I just do.”
“Well I don’t.” I said and with that I ripped my hand out of his and took off running. At first I was headed toward his car but then I realized that wouldn’t help me at all so I turned and started down the street.
Crazy. That was all it was. He was just some crazy dude who liked fucking with other people’s minds.
There was a movement beside me. I glanced beside me and gasped, tripping and falling.
“Will you please just listen to me? You cannot go running off at night. Didn’t you hear me? My parents are looking for you. And who knows how many others they have looking for you!” Kaiden exclaimed helping me up.
How did he follow me so fast? I hadn’t even heard him...
“Just leave me alone, freak. I’m not in any danger, okay. Go get your head checked out.” I shouted and tried to run again. He wrapped his arms around my middle and picked me up, taking me swiftly back to his car. I struggled but it didn't do a bit of good.
We were suddenly there and I was feeling dizzy.
He put me gently in the car and warned me not to move. At that point I was so scared I didn’t think I could have moved anyway.
