Kaiden’s parents were here. In New York. Less than twenty yards from us.
Kaiden wasted no time getting us back to the hotel. He ducked into an alley and followed that, walking to a different street and then continuing from there. I guessed that he didn’t want them to know we were staying at the Hudson, but I didn’t even think they’d seen us. Had they?
We were there quickly since he ran; a litter faster than human pace. Malachi met us in the hallway, stony faced.
“Your parents passed by in the street.” He said to Kaiden. “Didn’t look twice at the Hudson. They just walked by all the stores.”
Kaiden nodded, setting me on my feet again. My legs were shaky.
We decided to order room service for dinner, all of us laying around in my suite. I ate like a pig. I couldn’t help it.
“How do you stay so skinny?” Malachi asked me, appalled. I shrugged and grinned.
Both Malachi and Kaiden hadn’t eaten anything and they told me it was because they’d hunted recently and didn’t need too. “It’s pretty unappealing really, and as we don’t need it, I’d rather hold off for tomorrow and get a better meal.” Malachi laughed, glancing at my food in slight disgust.
We talked, mainly about whatever came to mind, until it was around eleven. Malachi stood up, yawning. “Well I’m bushed. Night sugar.” He winked at me before strolling out into the hallway.
Kaiden didn’t leave. He was looking at me with an odd expression. There was concern in his eyes.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know how they found us...” He put his face in his hands, his words trailing off.
“I’ve seen them before.” I told him. His head snapped up and he gaped at me, unable to say anything. I continued. “They were walking past our school once, staring at me. The man was laughing and the woman was smiling. At first they just seemed like a happy couple... but then I realized that they were just watching me. It was kind of creepy.”
He laughed in spite of himself. “Kind of?”
I smiled. He looked at the wall thoughtful, still smiling slightly. “I’m not going to let them hurt you.” I told me, looking back and meeting my gaze. We stared at each other for a moment before I glanced down at my hands. I slid my back against the headboard, leaning back and looking at him.
“Why are your parents so special? You said they were... sort of royal.” I asked, trying to remember what his exact words had been.
(“My family is sort of royal. Well my parents and brothers are. I was disowned because I ran away. My father has a lot of power so he’s sort of in the position of a king.”)
(“According to the prophecy, my parent’s youngest son–” he pointed to himself, “would meet this girl.” He pointed to me. “And they’d find a way to take down the powerful Evans family.”)
“What makes them so powerful?” I asked.
He took a deep breath and I settled myself in for a long story. “A long, long time ago -- don’t ask me how long ago because I don’t know -- there was this guy named Miarvé. He was a scientist and incredibly smart. He exiled himself from society -- I don’t know why -- when he was twenty-one years old. A few years later, he build some sort of contraption that let him find ways into other worlds.” Kaiden paused, glancing around to make sure the door was closed and the window shut. He got up and closed the curtains for good measure.
“Other worlds?” Had it been humanly possible my eyebrows would have hit the ceiling.
Kaiden nodded, shooting me a “don’t interrupt” look. I pursed my lips and he went on. “He found four worlds, not including this one. At the time many creatures were just running all over the place. We think he was the first human to find the other worlds -- we can’t be sure because it was so long ago.
“So Miarvé went from world to world and explored. He found many other creatures -- such as fairies, goblins, witches -- and he boasted that he was the first human to have found the worlds. Eventually word of a magical machine that could let you travel through worlds got back to a vampire named Dominic.
“There were vampires in these worlds, but not very many. It was the same with werewolves. They could go into the worlds but they fought with many of the other creatures. Mainly fairies and goblins. Dominic wanted to go to each world and find one with very few fairies so that he could kill them all and rule that world. Goblins were much more easily disposed of. He sought Miarvé and killed him.
“With the machine, he found a world that he liked. It was just like this world, only populated with creatures besides humans. Very few creatures lived here at the time and the most common to see was witches. Dominic gathered many vampires and werewolves and went to the other world. He appealed to the witches and some went to his side. Others fled or were killed. Soon, he had taken over that world.
“War broke out and each world was taken over by a creature. The first world was ruled by Dominic. Mostly vampires and werewolves lived here but almost all other creatures were free to come and go. All except fairies and goblins. The second world was predictably claimed by fairies. Goblins lived there for a long while before they started to fight with the fairies. The fairies wanted them to do their bidding, be slaves of sorts. They revolted and tried to claim the third world for their own. Witches got their first and destroyed most of the goblins. They hold power in that world now. Every race can go into it if they please but the witches are not an accepting or forgiving people. They are quick to punish, making it dangerous grounds. And the fourth world is a world made up of lost or evil souls. It’s an underworld or limbo of sorts. When someone of pure evil dies, they go there to be trapped forever. People who lose their minds or spirits also go there. It’s extremely dangerous for any creatures to travel there.”
He stopped when he saw my expression. I was pretty sure my mouth was hanging open. I composed it again.
His voice was softer now, slower. “A couple years after Dominic gained power he took a bride. And when I say ‘took’ I mean just that. She was a young human girl named Liyah who was betrothed to someone she’d grown up with. He stole her away from her world and forced her to marry him. After a few years of their marriage, she died giving birth to a son. It wasn’t surprising, since almost all humans that carried vampires did die. Then, out of nowhere, he was stolen when he was a few months. Dominic looked and looked for him, killing first and asking questions later. After a few years, everyone wanted Dominic gone. He was making quite a few enemies.
“One vampire, Garth Evans, told all the other vampires that he knew how to bring Dominic out of power. He boasted and promised to bring Dominic down. He also spread stories and rumors that ruined what was left of Dominic’s good reputation. Eventually Dominic sought him out. Garth killed him and then took power. Garth was his son.
“Garth kept power until he became weak with age then he passed it onto his offspring and on so and so on. Eventually power passed to Charles Evans when he turned twenty-one. He took a wife, like everyone else. She was a beautiful human girl named Rose. Unlike normal humans taken as mates, she survived giving birth, and not just once. She had three boys, Edward, the oldest; John, the middle child; and myself, the youngest. They’ve been in power roughly three centuries.”

Kaiden’s POV
Celia studied her hands intensely for a moment before her eyebrows pushed together and her head came up. “I thought vampires couldn’t die. Why would they weaken with age?”
I couldn’t help laughing a little. Hollywood had many different versions of vampirism and not many were very accurate at all. “We can die, we just die my much slower than humans. Once we get very old we start to get weak. Usually my ancestors have handed over their power sooner than they have to just to make sure that no one can over power them and take over the family.”
Celia nodded, taking it all in. I could tell she still had a little bit of trouble believing it, even though she’s seen and felt the speed we possessed and my fangs. It was understandable.
“How did you and Malachi become friends?” She asked, as she shifted her position so she was laying down and resting her head on her hand.
“When I was disowned I had to run away from my family -- their real intention had been to kill me and just say that I’d disappeared after being disowned. Malachi was also alone and on the run from a psycho ex-girlfriend who had her family hunting him. We ran into each other, swapped stories and we’ve been friends since.” I smiled, thinking about how much trouble we’d been in together.
Celia let out a big yawn. “You should sleep now, I’ve given you a lot to think about.”
Standing, I had the sudden urge to hug her. Knowing I shouldn’t, I took a few steps back and turned a little. The urge to go back to her and lay with her grew as she let her head fall down onto the pillow.
“Goodnight Celia.” I said quietly, turning and striding to the door. As my hand touched the door knob I heard her whispered goodnight.

Celia’s POV
I rolled over and took a deep breath. The air smelled like cinnamon and blueberries. It was mouth watering.
Slowly opening my eyes I saw that the bedroom door was open, leading to the main room where the delicious smell must be coming from.
I wandered lazily to the main room, peering in. Malachi was laying on the wide couch with his feet lounging on the opposite end and Kaiden was in one of the chairs. There was food trays on the table all empty except for one that was covered. They both looked up when I came in.
Malachi laughed when he saw me and I ran my hand through my hair self-consciously. It was curly naturally, as I hadn’t straightened it.
Kaiden shot him a look that I didn’t understand. “Good morning. Are you hungry?” He pointed to the covered plater and I nodded, my stomach grumbling.
He took off the cover and Malachi swung his legs off the couch, making room for me.
It was a cinnamon roll, a blueberry bagel, a piece of plain toast, a pancake, some bacon, some sausage and some eggs. It all looked delicious.
“I wasn’t sure what you’d want.” Kaiden explained. I smiled at him and picked up a fork, so hungry that I didn’t mind that they were both staring in amusement while I was shoveled it down. At first.
After I’d eaten the eggs, bacon and plain toast, it started to get on my nerves. “Will you cut it out?” I asked, glaring at Malachi.
He wiggled his eyebrows. “You’re a bottomless pit.”
Kaiden snorted and coughed to hide it and I stuck my tongue out at him the moment I had cleared food out of my mouth. I ate all of it, the covered it again and leaned back against the couch.
“What about you guys? Have you eaten?” I asked, patting my now full belly. Malachi flickered a glance at Kaiden, one that I didn’t understand, before raising his eyebrows in clear amusement at me. He didn’t answer but I took that for a yes for him. Kaiden was now shifting uncomfortably in his seat, staring at the TV.
“So what are we doing today?” I asked, deciding to drop the subject. It wasn’t my business who Kaiden drank from and, if he was uncomfortable with the topic, I didn’t need to push it.
Malachi rolled over suddenly so his head was in my lap. “He won’t let us do anything!” He said in a sad voice. “He’s going to make us all stay here, all cooped up all day long!”
I rolled my eyes and looked up at Kaiden. “We’re staying inside so you’re parents don’t find us, right?” He nodded.
“No! We’re staying inside so that they don’t find you! It’s all your fault!” He pouted up at me.
“Someone’s restless.” I noted.
He snorted. “Are you kidding? Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve been laid?”
Kaiden burst out laughing while I shoved Malachi’s head roughly off my lap. “Pig.”
Malachi grinned loosely. “You know, you’re a girl. And I’m a guy.”
I rolled my eyes. “No way!” I yelled jumping up and pretending to examine my boobs. “I hadn’t noticed! What are we gonna do?” I feigned horro.
Kaiden practically fell onto the floor laughing and Malachi sat up, narrowing his eyes at me. “That’s not what I meant.”
I smirked cockily. “I know. And you’ll have better luck trying to seduce the door if you keep using lines like those.”
He glared and Kaiden roared with laughter. “Stop picking on me.”
I plopped down on the couch. “Baby.” Kaiden and I muttered at the same time.
We watched TV for a while before Malachi finally got bored enough to haul himself up from the couch and go into his own room. Kaiden came to sit beside me on the couch and wrapped his arm around my waist. I leaned my head onto his shoulder.
“How come you haven’t feed?” I asked bluntly.
Kaiden stiffened a little. It was a moment before he answered. “Remember the prophecy?”
“Yes..” I hesitated trying to remember all of it.
“According to that, after I’ve met this girl -- you -- I not supposed want anyone else’s blood.”
I pondered that for a moment. “So just because some stupid prophecy says you’re not supposed to want anyone else’s, you don’t? Maybe it’s wrong.”
He started shaking his head before I could finish. “It’s not.” He sounded absolute.
I turned to look at him, meeting his eye. “Well then why haven’t you fed?”
He gazed back at me. “Aren’t you listening? I can’t feed off anyone else. I don’t know how I drunk from Grace, especially after talking to her. I just can’t do it.”
It was my turn to shake my head. “I didn’t mean feed off someone else.”
It was a moment before he comprehended what I was saying. He slid away from me, withdrawing his arm. “No.”
I sighed. Of course he had to be all self-sacrificing. “I don’t care, you know. I trust you.”
He shook his head, glaring and looking like he was trying to hold his breath. “No.” He almost hissed angrily.
“Why not?” I demanded. “You need food!”
He exhaled slowly. “It’s too dangerous. I can’t do that to you.”
I took the change in his tone as his willpower weakening and slid closer to him. “Is it going to hurt?”
Without seeming to realize what he was doing, he reached up to play with my hair. “No, it–” He shook his head, suddenly impassive again. “I’m not doing it.”
I flipped my hair to my right side, leaning comfortably against the couch, waiting.
He sighed and closed his eyes. “You’re so stubborn.” He hissed angrily. I couldn’t tell if he was angry with me or with himself. Probably both.
“I know.” I nodded, watching him carefully.
I knew that he wasn’t going to feed from someone else. I could see that when he talked about it. And if he wouldn’t feed, then he’d be weaker and less prepared if something happened with his parents. I wasn’t going to let that happen. I slid closer to him still.
Slowly, not opening his eyes, he leaned toward me and kissed my jaw lightly. He kissed down to my neck, and hesitated. I curled my fingers into his hair, trying not to get scared and back out. I tried to keep my muscles relaxed and not tense. That wouldn’t help anything.
I felt his fangs extract and then there was a small pinch as they pierced the my skin. He was right, it didn’t hurt. After a moment it actually started to feel good. I could feel heat rise to my cheeks as I bit back a small noise of pleasure.
What the hell is wrong with me? I thought, as I ran my fingers through his silky hair. It was soft and perfect.
He was done fairly quickly and I felt his tongue run along my neck, over the bite. He pulled back and looked at me, his face impassive and excited. He licked the remaining blood off his lips and leaned in, pressing his lips to mine.
