“Are you sure you want to do this?” Ariana asked, giving me a hard look.

I nodded and examined my dress in the mirror again. Sam and I were standing together in front of the huge mirror in Ariana’s room. We were wearing matching blue dresses, both a dark, navy satin. Mine had a black strap around the middle and Sam’s had a black outline around the top of her bodice. Both dresses were strapless and came to just above our knees. We both had on black heels only mine were a little higher than Sam’s because they’d wanted us to be the same height and she was a couple inches taller than I was. Ariana had done my hair up in curls and braids and pinned it in the back and Sam’s up in a low ponytail that was curled with her bangs braided back. She’d also done both our makeup the same way; dark mascara, a little eyeliner and a touch of blue eyeshadow.

“Why do we have to look alike, again?” I asked Ariana.

She rolled her eyes, as if she’d already explained this a thousand times. “It’s tradition for all of the women going through the ceremony to look alike. Both elegant and beautiful—” Sam cut her off with a snort.

“Guess we’d better start over then, huh?”

I prodded her side gently with my elbow. “That should be my line. You look drop dead gorgeous.”

She laughed and rolled her eyes and I knew she didn’t believe me. Ariana spoke up. “You’ll both know how beautiful you look when you see the boy’s reactions to you.” She chuckled and came toward me with a can of hairspray.

I let her coat my hair thickly without moving. I knew this was important. I’d just have to suck it up and be a good little barbie doll for tonight.

Ariana briefed us on what we had to do again. It was pretty simple. All the women had to was walk down the stairs and go to their mates and then take a drink from a glass when told too. It was really the guys who had the complicated job.

Ariana saw my expression and frowned at me. “Just because it doesn’t seem hard, doesn’t mean it will be. You do realize that it’s not going to be all sunshine and daisies, right?”

Sam spared me from answering. “We know perfectly well what it’s going to be like, Ariana. And we’ve made our decisions. Can we get on with it already?”

Ariana sighed and nodded before taking two silver roses off of her dresser. She tucked one in each of our hair and then shooed us out of the room. She rushed down the stairs ahead of us. We knew what to do. We had to wait until it was three minutes before midnight to walk down and then Kaiden and Joshua would take us to the ceremony room.

We watched the clock anxiously until it read three minutes until midnight. We both practically ran down the stairs in our haste, both of us excited and terrified. Sam looked at me before we got to the bottom of the huge, winding stairwell.

“I’m glad I got to do this with you.” She whispered. I nodded and leaned over to hug her, trying not to mess anything up.

When we got to the bottom, Kaiden, Joshua, Ariana, Malachi and Joshua’s parents surrounded us. I walked to Kaiden and took his hand and Sam walked to Joshua. Both men looked very handsome, all dressed up in tuxedos. Joshua’s parents were also dressed up and Malachi looked like he had tried to dress up — he was wearing dark jeans and a black button up shirt. He did look pretty spiffy compared to his usual attire.
