I think being a detective is fun. I like being able to help people by solving mysteries. It's my favorite thing to do!
Recently I've been helping out around the Future Foundation headquarters by doing paperwork, organizing things, etc. I was more like a maid rather than a detective, but I didn't mind. I was happy as long as everyone else was happy.
There was one time where they paired me up with Mrs. Ogami for a case. I think I can say it was a success. It was solved pretty quickly and everyone praised us. I did help out a bit, but it wasn't something worthy of attention...
Or maybe I just didn't like the attention.
I can't tell.
The point is, I'm more of a helper. All of the cases I've taken so far have partnered me up with somebody. And if I'm being honest, that's a good thing. I don't know what I'd do if they assigned me my own case! That means they'd be completely dependent on me, expecting me to solve the case perfectly. But that's impossible! I can't do anything perfectly!
Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to try. I mean, they made me the Ultimate Detective for a reason! An incredibly stupid reason, I'm sure, but a reason nonetheless..
I check the alarm clock on my desk. It's not even 6am yet? I could start getting ready for school early. I head downstairs to see my dad, who's already dressed and eating breakfast.
"Shuichi! Good morning!" he smiles a big, sweet smile like he always does. My dad has the ability to bring hope and joy to whoever he meets. That's an incredible personality trait. I wonder if I'll be able to have something like that.
"Good morning, dad." I smile back and head to the kitchen.
"Oh, I just made some pancakes. They should still be warm if you want some!" he calls to me.
"Thank you," I look on the stovetop and see that there are, in fact, fluffy pancakes waiting to be eaten. My dad's pancakes are the best. I don't know how he does it, but they're always just the right texture, and they're so sweet!
I make myself a plate and sit down just as my mom comes down the stairs. "Good morning, you two." We both respond with a cheerful "good morning" and begin eating when mom joins us.
"Shuichi, do you think you'll be able to make it to the Future Foundation today?" my mom asks. That's odd, the Foundation usually never asks for me...
"Of course I can," I tell her, even though I'm already pretty nervous. They never ask for me there. This must be pretty important...
"Good to hear. Come after school if you can."

"Shuichi, did you hear? Kaede's coming back for winter break!" Miu shouts excitedly. "Man, it's been forever since I've seen her! I can't wait!"
"Kaede? You mean the piano freak?"
Miu and I turn to see Kokichi casually sitting behind us, legs up on a desk.
"Gah! Don't sneak up on us like that!" I exclaim.
"And she isn't a piano freak!" Miu adds.
"And that isn't your seat," Junko groans, standing beside her desk. "Scram!"
Kokichi giggles and slowly gets up from her seat (to annoy her further, I assume) and moves to Miu's instead.
"Hey!" Miu yells.
"Relax, it's not like you're sitting in it anyway!"
I interrupt the two before they can start an argument. "Kokichi, you haven't actually met Kaede yet, have you?"
"Nope! I've seen her once, though. She's glued to that piano of hers!"
"Well, she is the Ultimate Pianist..." I murmur. "Maybe Miu and I can introduce you to her when she comes back!"
"Oh wow, Shumai! Are you inviting me to hang out with you over the break? How scandalous!" the purple-haired teases.
My face heats up. "I-It's not like that! And besides, Miu and Kaede will be there too!"
"Don't worry, Shuichi, I'll make sure to give you two some alone time~" Miu taunts, causing me to blush harder.
"G-guys!" I pull my hat over my head in an attempt to hide my face.
"Nishishi~ teasing Shumai is so fun!!" Kokichi jumps on me, almost pushing me out of my chair.
"Stop that..." I mutter, still blushing. "But... I wouldn't mind if you came to visit during the break..."
Kokichi's eyes widen for a moment, but he goes back to his normal, gleeful self in seconds. "Yay! Shumai's having me over!!"
Miu bites back a vulgar remark and takes the opportunity to take back her seat.
"Aw, Miu! You took the seat back..." the leader whines.
"Yeah! It's my seat. Go back to your weird hope buddy," she scoffs, pointing towards the back of the classroom.
"Hmph! Fine! See ya after class, Shumai!" Kokichi skips back to his desk as soon as Ms. Yukizome enters the room to start the class.
