Travis had eventually managed to swap places with Sage seeing as she was now on the floor in a fit of giggles, whereas he had managed to pull himself up against the table. He huffed slightly, "It wasn't that funny, ya know.." his hair had fallen carefully over his eyes after all the commotion, to which he brushed to the side.

"It- it was." Sage panted slightly, plopping herself on the table as she caught her breath. Travis scoffed sarcastically and went back to making breakfast, continuing casual chat as he did so.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He watched quietly from the doorway as she smiled at Travis' joke. She was laughing happily, it was enchanting in a way.
"I'll be back in a bit, I've got to go find those eggs." Travis called as he left the room through the opposite door. Sage called back a simple response, and continued sketching out something on the parchment in front of her. Her hair had been messily tied away from her face, with the exception of a few straggly baby hairs flowing in front of her eyeline. Considering how long her hair was, the makeshift 'bun' looked like a giant ball of hay, but to Laurence it looked cute, and suited her well.
He watched as she unconsciously twitched her face into thoughtful yet focused expressions, scrunching her nose every few minutes. Eventually she looked up after hearing the sound of shuffling, her ears had become exceptionally sensitive to any human noises recently. Maybe it could be something to do with being away from the grotto for so long?
"Hey, good morning." Laurence voiced softly, smiling towards her from the doorway.
"Oh! Good...morning?" Sage chirped back, though she seemed slightly confused with her words. Laurence decided it'd be alright for her to be closer to him than a few feet apart, so he walked towards the table she was sat at, and sat opposite her. He wouldn't sit directly next to her just yet, he wouldn't want to make her feel uncomfortable.
"Did you sleep well?" He asked, looking down at all the differently sketched maps in front of the girl. There was no way she'd been sat there all night, surely?
"Sleep? Oh no, not much. You'd think fairies could sleep wherever like in the stories, but unfortunately there are only certain spots fairies like myself can get a beneficial nights' sleep. If I slept anywhere else I'd just be passing time with no positive outcome." She replied, as she explained Laurence gradually noticed how sunken her face was. Her eyes were occupied by light bags, and she was a tad paler than when she arrived on the ship. Her voice also seemed to unintentionally drag out certain words.
"Could you possibly tell me more? Travis knows a lot about you, but he's confined how much he speaks of you since you arrived. I'd love to know how I could help in any way." Laurence spoke up, a friendly smile appearing upon his lips.
Sage's face lit up, a shocked but happy expression appearing as she quickly gathered some plain parchment and her pencil as she sat down again.
"Of course! There's a lot to tell so I'd suggest getting comfy, haha!" She exclaimed as she began sketching on the parchment.
"Right, I guess the first thing to know is all the types of fairies. Each fairy has a special power based around the element they were assigned at birth. I was assigned to the earth grotto, which focuses on things such as weather, physical nature, and spiritual nature. Every focus is a different branch, and you get to choose what branch to solely focus on when you experience your thirteenth moon."
"What are moons? Are they like your timeframe?"
"In a sense, yes. Fairies and pixies use the timeframe 'moon' for every ten years they spend alive. Fairies tend to live for around three thousand years if they're lucky."
"Wait, thirteenth moon? And you said a single moon is classed as 10 years, so that means that you're around 130 years old when you gain your chosen focus? How old are you?"
"Look at you with the quick mathematics, you're certainly correct. Usually I don't go around sharing my age to people, but you seem like the type to keep a secret. I believe I turn 142 next week." Laurences jaw fell slack at hearing this, how did she look so good for that age?
"Shocked? Hehe, thought you might be. Lucky for you that fairy years act differently to human ones. Our fairy ages are doubled in human years, and once converted from our fairy months into the amount of human years we get our human age, so therefore I'm really only 23 next week. It's very confusing, but all you humans have to think is that I'm basically the same ages as you all." She smiled, witnessing an extremely confused Laurence.
"Huh..."
"Let's continue about the many things about fairies, shall we?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"I just have one question, why do you call yourself a pixie but others of your kind fairies?" Laurence asked after an hour, three sketch-full parchment pieces, and several passers-by later.

"Oh! That's because I'm not a fully-fledged fairy yet. Seeing as I'm less than 100 years into control of my chosen focus, myself and others like me are classed as pixies, the 'babies' of the species."

Surprise! I know it's been about three months since this book saw some love, but I've been rewatching MCD again and realised how much I loved Laurence. Anyways, hopefully expect some more chapters before the end of the month! <3

Also, p.s., I kindly suggest you re-read the book as even I'd forgotten the plot lmao.
Enjoy, <3
