The nightmares had plagued your mind for more days than you'd like to admit and your complexion worsened when detective Smoker would swing by to see how you were doing. You often wondered if he had nothing better to do, only to be proven wrong when he never got disturbed by incoming calls when he had taken you out of the house for some much needed sunlight and background noise of other people. The comforting smell of coffee and spiced tea filled your nostrils as you sat down. Smoker took off his gloves, rubbing his hands together harshly to rid himself of the creeping cold. How long had it been since you'd seen Killer, you wondered. It was still warm back then. Quickly your hot drinks were placed in front of the both of you by the young waitress, the girl skittish at the moody expression from your companion. If you were in her shoes, you'd do the same to be honest.
"How are you doing lately?" The man asked, his golden eyes watching your face as you let your gaze drop to the foam on your cappuccino, the latte art never failing to bring a small smile on your face. It was a shame whenever you had to drag a spoon through the art, especially as it was a pretty lotus.
"I'd say I'm doing fine, but that would be a lie." You answered Smoker's question, your movement a bit sluggish as you stirred your coffee and let the spoon rest between your lips to lick off the coffee from the metal surface. Only now did you look up at the older man, his eyebrows raised and his gaze warm as he sighed before moving to grab a cigar from his coat. "Lately it has been tough. My mind likes to replay everything I've witnessed that time and it feels like I'm stuck." Smoker grunted in response, his gaze traveling from you to the surroundings, letting his own mind wander a bit before he collected his thoughts.
"You'll have to survive it and live through it all like you did back then." He leaned forward a bit, his forearms resting on the table and his cup filled with coffee between them. "Listen. I know I'm not supposed to share this with the public, but I think you deserve to know." Smoke bellowed from his lips and flew from his nose as he breathed out those words like second nature. It made you almost think he did these kinds of things too many times. "Killer is going to be put to justice this month. As much as he can't hurt you right now, the idea of him will be gone with him. I hope you'd feel better when that had happened, (y/n)." Smoker muttered softly, his eyes leaving your face to observe the café once more for prying ears.
You hummed as you sipped from your coffee, your stomach doing flips before squeezing in worry that the plan would fail. Smoker didn't seem to catch on at your uneasiness as you shifted a bit in your seat. "It still doesn't put my heart to rest, even in knowing, detective. And I must admit, I don't enjoy the thought of people dying, even if it is said to be done in justice." Smoker's golden eyes snapped back towards you, his lips forming a tight line before he sighed heavily.
"I understand. Don't forget he was prosecuted and it was demanded by the judge, not me. There is no need to condemn me for it." Only when his words registered in your mind did you realise you were glaring at the detective, whispering a soft sorry. "It's alright. You've had sleepless nights and nightmares. I understand. And it's not like I sense joy to seeing people being sentenced to death." Another cloud of smoke bellowed into your face by accident as Smoker tried to wave it away from between the both of you. "Let's talk about something else instead. It's depressing shit, ain't it?" You nodded with the last statement as you finished your coffee, going over some mundane stuff to throw the man off your tail for at least a few days again. As much as you did enjoy the free coffee he provided and the sense of comfort he radiated from his mannerism, it didn't sit too well with you. He was a little bit too interested, a little too comfortable with you and a little too pushy for some things in your life lately. You felt like you'd walk on eggshells around him and you couldn't breathe freely, such a different feeling as to what you grew accustomed to with Kid and Killer.
