“Cyrus. Cyrus, wake up.” Julian shook me pleading for me to awaken. I opened my eyes.

“Hey Julian. Where are we?” I asked, sitting up and stretching.

“We’re about half-way there. I need food so I stopped at this rest stop. They always have at least Vending machines at these places.” He answered and got out of the truck.

I got out a little too quickly and got super light headed. I nearly fell over, but I caught myself on the rear view mirror. That was a Close call. I followed Julian to the vending machines and got a root beer and some Doritos. Julian looked at me.

“You ok buddy?” He had genuine concern in his voice.

“Yes. I’m excited…I just…Can’t show it Julian…It’s hard.” I told him. It was the truth mostly. I was glad to get a new start. But my mother…We were so close…It would be forever before I got over her untimely death.

“I understand bud. Gonna go to the bathroom?” He took my chips and soda, already knowing I would. I nodded. “Ok…I’ll be waiting in the truck ok?” I nodded a second time as he walked to the truck as I headed to the restroom.

After I was done doing my business I washed my hands and walked out with my ear buds in and Breaking Benjamin playing from my iPod. They were my favorite band. I got in the car and Julian didn’t bother me. I fell asleep again, more tired than I was before. That always happened to me when I slept during the day.

Later I woke up, having rested as much as I could. I had no idea how far from Charleston we were, but It was late. I didn’t bother looking at the clock. The thing I liked about long drives was that I could absorb all the things. I liked the streetlights and cars, the shadows dancing through the trees… Nature was one of the few things in life I still enjoyed. Me and my mom went up to New York and went hiking in a couple of state parks once. The leaves in autumn were so pretty…I remembered those times, and tried not to cry thinking of mom. Times like now. I started crying quietly. Julian rubbed my shoulder. I kept observing the places around the highway until I noticed a city’s shining lights. We were there. Julian got off at our exit and headed for a suburban area away from the heart of the city. We pulled up to a long driveway. The long gravel path to the house had endless trees on both sides. I loved forests. It was another few minutes before we pulled up to a Victorian style mansion. It was in prime condition. Clearly it had been refurbished recently. My eyes widened.

“Julian…I thought we had a small place…” There was pure awe in my voice. Barely anything could still do that.

“I wanted to surprise you Kiddo.” He grinned. “There’s a stream a little ways away from the back yard.”

“Thank you.” I hugged him the best I could with him driving. He pulled up as close as he could to the house.

“Your room is upstairs, in the first hallway. It’s the first on the left. Go on in pal. I’ll get the bags.” He said. He was always so considerate. I was tired and I wanted to get up to my bed. I went up the porch to the door and opened it. I couldn’t see much. I flipped On the light and headed upstairs. The place was amazing from what I could see in the dark. I walked into the room Julian told me about. Everything was set up. And by that, I mean everything, my bed, my blankets, and even my posters. Most of them evolved into Black veil Brides posters, I still had the power ranger blankets though. Don’t judge me. I flopped down on my bed and Fell asleep Immediately.
