Author's note: Part 9/?? of Pat/Non story.
The clinic was unexpectedly calm today. Pat led his mother through the long corridors to the VIP wing. The woman was walking beside him, looking around the place. He knew that face. She was calculating, assessing and judging his new workplace. Pat rolled his eyes. He stopped in front of the familiar door, his hand slipping into his coat pocket, feeling the tiny origami star.
"Try not to scare him." He warned his mother. She snickered, pushing him out of the way, and burst into the patient's ward before he could stop her.
"Oh honey, I knew something was wrong when you didn't show up in the shelter." His mother's voice echoed through the room. Pat was startled by her statement. He had no idea what she was talking about and why she acted like she knew Non. He followed her absentmindedly, observing the situation. Whatever Non was creating from the yellow paper was abandoned as soon as his mother pulled the younger boy into her arms.
"Auntie." Non's soft voice rang in Pat's ears, and again he was confused.
"What's going on?"He dared to speak up, eying the two in front of him.
"Coincidence," his mother turned to him with Non still wrapped in her arms.
"We met at the children's shelter for a charity event. That one you refused to go with me at." She glared at him, but Pat only thought about how he could have met Non sooner if he weren't stupid.
"We talked and met here more time. I was worried when Non didn't show up." She glanced back at the boy, settled comfortably in her embrace.
"Sorry." Non answered shyly.
"Don't be, honey. Your soon-to-be mother-in-law is now here to help you." She kissed the top of Non's head, and Pat wanted nothing more than drag her out of the room. She was embarrassing him in front of Non. The young patient's eyes widened, glancing at him confusedly.
"Oh, right. You don't know. Pat is the ungrateful son I talked with you about." She smiled at Non. Pat was about to retort something when Non's sniffles stopped him. He didn't know why the younger cried, but he wanted to hide him in his arms and console him instead of his mother.
