The helicopter was silent except for the blades humming as they cut through the air. A Russian named Nikolai was flying the helicopter as Price sat on the seats opposite of Ghost and Ernaline. A thick cigar rested in Price's mouth as he silently sat and observed the two soldiers in front of him. Ernaline sat to the right of Ghost and was looking out of the helicopter door, feeling the cool air blow into the aircraft. Small tufts of hair slid out of her bun as the wind lashed across her face. Mountains moved underneath them as they neared the Russian base.
Ghost remained silent as he snuck some glances at the young sergeant. He noticed her calm demeanor and was puzzled. Usually new members show signs that they are afraid. Either a slight shake of the hands, biting their nails, or fidgeting with their hands. However, as he looked at Ernaline he just saw the girl sitting with her head high as she viewed the scenery from the helicopter door.
After another few minutes of comfortable silence, Price finally spoke. "Do you guys need a refresher of the mission?" He asked.
The two soldiers looked at eachother and shook their heads no. The mission was pretty straight forward. Infiltrate the base without drawing attention and locate the ACS. Besides, Ernaline knew the mission would be easy. All she was supposed to do was cover Ghost while he did the challenging part.
"Ok great, because ETA is 3 minutes. Get ready to descend the ropes. We can't land because of the mountainous terrain, instead we'll drop you off by the ice ledge and you will use your ice picks to climb the ice wall. This will assure that we will stay hidden and off the radars while we drop you off." The captain explained.
Ernaline watched as the helicopter slowly descended towards an ice ledge. Ghost got up from his seat and signaled Ernaline to follow him. Doing as told, she grabbed a rope that was attached to the inside of the helicopter and threw it out the door. The rope unraveled until it stopped about three feet off the ground. Being 5' 10'' it wasn't much of a drop for her. She waited as Ghost went first. Grabbing the rope with his gloved hands he jumped out of the helicopter. He slowed his decent as he neared the end. Once he reached the bottom of the rope he let go and landed perfectly on the ice. Without wasting time Ernaline repeated the process. She slipped down the rope, thanking the gloves for not only keeping her warm but also protecting her hands from rope burn. Once she reached the end of the rope she let go, landing next to Ghost. Not only did they both have white coats and pants, but their guns were also white. Allowing them to blend in perfectly with the snow.
Over the comms, Price talked to the pair, "Nikolai will find somewhere down south to land while you two carry out the mission. Stay safe out there and keep a low profile."
"Rodger. We will be heading over to the base now. Out." Ghost replied, making his way over to the ice wall.
Ernaline scrambled after him, taking her ice picks out as she watched Ghost make his way up the wall. She studied his movements, learning how to climb up as well. He seemed to do it one pick at a time, making sure both of his feet were planted into the wall with the shoe spikes before moving on. Following his example, Rockes followed closely behind. Underneath her thick coat, her arm and core muscles worked to keep her close to the ice. She silently thanked herself for frequenting the gym on a normal basis.
As the two continued up the ice, a plane flew by. The shockwave caused some of the ice overhead to break apart, tumbling down on the two climbing the wall. The ice barely missed them as they pressed their bodies towards the cliff face, narrowly dodging the falling ice. The silence shared between the two broke as Ghost cursed through the comms.
"Fucking hell. That was a close one. All you all right?" He asked while looking down at Rockes.
"Affirmative, I managed to dodge the ice in time." She replied, continuing forward. After another minute Ghost managed to pull himself over the edge. He sighed in relief as he waited for Rockes to catch up. As she went to pull herself up she felt Ghost's hand grab her, assisting her up.
