Marty woke up to broken speech.
He lifted his head and realized it was the radio. Olivia was up and tuning it to the channel Lenny was on.
"We need help!" Lenny yelled.
Olivia picked up the mic and said, "Slow down, Lenny! What's your situation?"
"I found where the distress call came from. She's a girl aged 16. We're on the roof and zombies are closing in. I'm almost out of bullets!" he cried. There was the sound of gun fire and gurgled yells.
"I'm on my way!" Olivia yelled.
"No! Send Mike!"
Mike looked over at Marty and shook his head.
Why is he such a coward? he thought. "I'll go Lenny! Where are you at?" He gave the street name and address. "Hang in there! I'll be there soon!"
Marty marched over to the wall of guns and found a machine gun similar to the one Lenny had. He also grabbed a small pistol and stuffed it into the back of his pants.
"Marty? Why are you going out there?" Mike cried, grabbing his arm.
"I'm going because I know you're too much of a pussy to go out there yourself." Mike went silent. "That's what I thought. He saved my life. I owe him."
He marched past him as Olivia grabbed his arm. "Thank you, Marty, really. Bring him back safe for me."
Marty blushed and nodded. He marched up the stairs before stopping and turning around. "What's the code to get back in?"
"12345!" Olivia yelled.
"Of course it is," Marty murmured. He slowly opened the door and closed the door behind him. He began creeping through the house, checking around corners and moving fairly quickly. He played enough first person shooter games to know this is how it's done. Once he knew the house was clear, he slowly opened the door and stepped outside.
The street was completely empty. It had an eerie aura to it... It was like a ghost town with all the people evacuated or turned into zombies. It didn't help that all the houses looked the exact same.
He looked over at the rising sun. He could only imagine how beautiful it looked over the ocean...
Focus, Marty, he told himself.
He tiptoed across the street and between the houses. He stopped at the end of one of the houses, moving back against the side and slowly walking himself to the end of it. He aimed his gun at the backyard. He then jumped to the other side, checking the other backyard. Both were clear.
He stepped out onto the grass and sighed. Lenny was in immediate danger. If he did this the whole time he would never get there in time.
Screw it, he thought, holding the gun close to his chest and began sprinting, keeping his head on a swivel for zombies. He spotted a couple of them in the distance, and prayed they didn't see him...
He continued on, checking the street names. It was this way... right?
He began hearing gun fire, so he started off in that direction. Along the way, he ran into a couple zombies. They growled at him and ran at him, arms flailing around and jaws open wide.
Marty, feeling a sudden rush of adrenaline, raised his gun and fired at them. The bullets tore through them as they collapsed backwards, blood squirting out of their wounds.
"Holy shit," Marty said. "I'm a badass..."
Focus, Marty! his inner voice exclaimed.
"Right!" he said, continuing to run forward, jumping over the zombie corpses. He charged at the gunfire, seeing where it was coming from. A group of dozens of zombies surrounded a house, some climbing up the side. They were clambering over each other to reach the top, where Lenny was firing away at them. He seemed to be sparing his ammunition, putting only a couple rounds in each zombie. Next to him crouched a girl with brown hair that he didn't recognize.
