As known, Allie does not like Elliot very much at all, and them living together for the 6 years of Elliot's life, he obviously caught on to that fact. He noticed when ever was not around, his sister seemed so much happier. He always felt excluded from his family, due to the fact he wasn't actually supposed to be there.

he knew his family would be a lot happier without him, he was pretty smart in a way at 6, knowing that his family's happiness just falls apart because of him. Especially his sister, so he needed to find an excuse to leave and never come back.

He did ask his mother secretly . .
"What is a way to disappear but never return?"
Her response being. .
"By dying."

So fast forward to when the he first saw the Barnabas ad,
This ice cream man would often crawl out of the tv and talk with Elliot, becoming his friend.
So Elliot thought. .
"Would my friend do me a favour?"

This was his chance to run away and never return, and disguise it with the fact he wanted to find the ice cream truck if he was found.

On the day of his disappearance, the curse kicked in a little too.
But most of it was his plan.

He ran away from the school.

"I'm not supposed to be here. . ." A line said by Elliot.
Most people would think that he was inferring to the fact he ran away from school, almost instantly regretting it.

Though, he may be implying that he was generally not supposed to be alive.
