THE WALK TO THE DINER WENT by faster than Mateo thought it would considering the fact he was walking with a boot. The diner itself was one of those small old timey ones with a countertop across from the kitchen and booths littered amongst the walls. Mateo looked at the colorful interior in awe.
"This place looks like it's straight out of an old movie from the 50's." Joked Mateo. It smelled strongly of coffee with the interning smell of grease and you could hear music playing faintly in the background.
Nodding in agreement, Jasper gently pulled the shorter teen towards a booth in the back after a quick glance at the 'Please, seat yourself!' Sign hanging on the wall. "This place had been around since the early 1900's, I believe." Spoke Jasper as he helped Mateo scoot into the booth, much to the tanned boy's annoyance, before quickly sliding into the seat across from him.
"You've been here before?" Questioned Mateo.
Humming, Jasper ran his fingers through his hair once before answering, "Once, it was a few years ago."
Mateo was about to ask how long ago that was before the waitress arrived at the table. "Hello! My name is Louise and welcome to Paula's. Here's the menus," She paused as she handed the two a menu before reaching in her apron pocket and pulling out silverware sets as will as her ticket booklet, sitting down two rolled up silverware sets she continued, "and your silverware. Ill give you some more time to look over your menu's but may I know your drink orders?"
Taking a quick look at the drinks to ensure they had them, Mateo looked up and gave his answer, "Can I have a strawberry milkshake and glass of water, please?" Writing don his order, she sent him a nod and smile before turning to his blond companion. "I'll just have water, ma'am."
"Alrighty, ill be right back with your waters and milkshake." Louise sent the two a warm smile before tucking her notepad back in her apron and heading over to the counter.
Letting out a small breath, Mateo turned back to look at Jasper only to see the other already staring at him, eyes twinkling in amusement. Seeing this, Mateo just raised an eyebrow in question. "It's nearing ten at night, are you sure a milkshake was a good idea?"
"Milkshakes are always a great idea, plus I had a craving. It's been months since I last had one." Mateo explained, playfuly glare at the amused teen across from him. "Oh right, did you and your siblings skip school today? When me and Ella arrived we didn't see neither of your cars. So either you all were late or just skipped."
Jasper started to answer only to be cut off by two waters and a delicious looking milkshake being placing in front of them. "Here's your drinks, do you two gentlemen know what you want to order?" Louise asked, once more pulling out her notepad.
Letting out a light whistle, Mateo grabbed the strawberry milkshake to closer inspect it. "That was quick."
"We are fairly empty at the moment, besides I've been doing this for nearly fourty years. I could make a killer milkshake in my sleep by this point." Louise chuckled, earning a small smile from Mateo.
"Well your years of experience payed off, it looks amazing and I'm sure it'll taste a million times better." Mateo smiled before looking back down at the menu. He hasn't gotten the chance to properly look at the items. "Uh, I'll take the French toast platter with eggs fried over medium and— do you have turkey bacon?" A nod was all the confirmation he needed. "Then I'll do that instead of the pork bacon." Handing back in menu, the two both turned to Jasper for his order before Mateo remembered one of the conversations they had, "Ah crap, I totally forgot about your special diet Sper."
Mateo let out a groan at his stupidity. How does one forget someone else's diet limitations? Especially someone they considered a friend and genuinely like. Reaching across the table, Jasper grabbed the hand that Mateo smacked his head with, "It's alright, I had a big lunch. It was part of the reason I went running earlier." Jasper tried to comfort the teen.
Deciding not to impose, the waitress gave the both a small smile before grabbing Jaspers means and whispering that the food will be out shortly.
"I can't believe I forgot though, we've known each other for just about three months now. It's key information I forgot." Mateo couldn't help but beat himself up, although Jasper was the one who offered to take him to grab some food, he still felt bad.
Not wanting him to feel so guilty anymore, Jasper tried to change the topic to a much lighter one, "So 'Sper', huh? That's a new one."
Realizing what he meant, Mateo wanted even more to curl up in a ball. "Oh god, it just slipped out. Forget i even said that, it's not even a good nickname. Too close to 'sperm'." Mateo cringed, usually his nicknaming skills were topteir. He was able come up with the perfect nickname within a few days of knowing someone but for some reason beyond him, a nickname for Jasper was impossible to determine. "I'll think of something else a billion times better than that."
Jasper let out a light laugh upon hearing the last mutter for Mateo. "Alright, on the day you reveal your nickname for me i will share yours aswell." Once more that knee weakening smile was revealed making Mateo's heart momently shutter before the blond's words reached his brain.
"Wait, you have a nickname for me?" Jasper only nodded. "Well you cant just not tell me. You have my imagination going trying to think of what it is, how am I supposed to sleep tonight?"
Shrugging, Jasper leaned forward in his seat, resting his elbow on the table before placing his chin on his palm, amber eyes staring fondly into curious brown ones. Unconsciously, Jasper sucked in a deep breath through his nose and for the first time in a long time, he felt calm. It was as if he just took an deep breath in in the mist of a field of lavender.
Blinking, Jasper frowned slightly at the thought before clearing his throat and backing up into his seat–much to Mateo's disappointment. "To answer your question from earlier, we did not attend school today. Much like yourself, my family decided to spend the rare day of warm weather in the woods. Spent the day hiking and hunting."
Right as he finished speaking Louise returned with Mateo's plate before giving the two a smile, "There you go, you call me if you two need anything else okay? I'll return in a bit with the bill." Thanking Louise once again the two turned back to each other.
"So," Mateo begun, reaching on the window seal to grab the syrup. "Do you guys go hiking every time it's nice out?"
"We try, sometimes we just spend the day together. Carlisle is usually busy at the clinic and we have school so we try to have family time whenever we can." Jasper answered, watching as the teen across from him all but inhaled his meal, shaking his head when Mateo offered a bacon slice to be polite.
Taking a sip of his water, Mateo let out a hum, "That sounds nice. Renee and I use to try all the time to go on hiking trips but Bella hates the outdoors, or at least the hiking part. Hey, maybe next time I can go hiking with you guys?"
"Sure." Mateo choked on his water at the straight foreword response to his joke. Grabbing a Napkin, Jasper held it out to the boy who gratefully took it. "I'll have to ask to make sure but I already know they will allow it. Edward and Rosalie might need a nudge but I'm sure Alice and Esme will talk them into it."
Rubbing his chest Mateo stared at the pale teen, waiting to see if he was serious. "If everyone agrees then of course I'll go, but are you sure it wont be an inconvenience? I mean, obviously I'll wait until my leg is healed up but.."
"If you're waiting until your leg heals then there's no good reason you'll inconvenience us. Besides," Once more the blond teen leaned closer, waving for Mateo to do the same as if he was about to share a secret with the brunette.
"I don't think there's anything in the world that could possibly make you inconvenient in my eyes."
