INSIDE HAWKINS MIDDLE, THE BELL RANG, dismissing the kids to their next class. Bella Winchester let out a long sigh, gathering her things into a neat pile in her arms. She noticed Mr. Clarke was speaking, but tuned him out anyway.
"Remember, finish chapter 12 and answer 12.3 on the difference between an experiment and other forms of science investigation. This will be on the test, which will cover chapters 10 through 12. It will be multiple choice with an essay section."
Kids continued fleeing the class as the group of five kids made their way to his desk. Soon, his eyes met each of theirs, seeing excitement spread across their faces. "So, did it come?"
"Sorry, guys, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but..." Mr. Clarke spoke, his voice drifting off.
Bella's head hung low once more, Lucas noticing and lightly pushing her with his shoulder as he saw a smile form on Mr. Clarke's face.
"It came!"
Bella let out a breath of relief as she and the four boys followed Mr. Clarke out of the room and down the school's halls. She swung her arms in excitement, nearly hitting Lucas and Nathaniel who had been walking on either side of her. Mr. Clarke laughed, a grin growing on Leanne's face.
No one had been as excited as she'd been.
Mike eventually ran ahead, throwing the door open. Bella followed behind the four eager boys to the only chair sitting in front of the machine. Mike pulled the chair out, immediately sitting down in the school.
"Yes!" He exclaimed.
"The Heathkit ham shack."
"Ain't she a beaut?"
"For sure, Mr. Clarke." Bella grinned, staring down at it in amazement.
She politely smiled Mr. Clarke then looked back at Lucas, who had been fiddling with the buttons and knobs on the machine, admiration clearly spread across his face. "I bet you can talk to New York on this thing."
"Think bigger."
"California?" Nathaniel guessed, cutting his eyes at Leanne.
