Many centuries ago
We envied the privileges
Our male kin were permitted
We learned to read and write
Which unlocked a door
Inside of our souls
Releasing unknown desires.
Frolicking among the meadows
Floating atop of ponds
With our eyes closed
Relishing solitude of freedom
Dancing about the grassland
Upon midnight in our chemises
As the full moon shimmers above.
Naturally we shared
These awakenings with
Young and old
Any female who dared to listen.
When men found they had lost
Their tightly bound hold
Upon wives and maidens
They deemed us witches
Consorting with Satan
And burned the instigaters
For men couldn't have
Women in control of their fates.
