Chapter 15

Detective Lauren Reid's Apartment, Chicago Illinois

The paramedic wheeled a half alert, Lauren, out of the apartment building and over to the ambulance. Jay was walking with them holding the detective's hand as her vision faded in and out. "Just hang in there, your gonna be okay," Jay told her as he helped load Lauren into the detective into the ambo. 

"I want every road from her to med shut down with a full escort NOW!" sergeant Voight ordered. "Serg I'm going to Med with Reid," Jay said as Voight nodded telling the detective to go as he hopped in the back of the ambulance and they took off escorted by half a dozen CPD officers. 

BAU Privet Jet

JJ, Hotch, Reid, and Rossi sat on the jet half way to Chicago for their case. Morgan and Prentiss went to talk Lauren into helping them with the investigation which she just shut down and kicked them out of her apartment. "Has Lauren ever acted like this before?" JJ asked looking at Spencer who was looking over the photos in the file of Lauren's multiple injuries over the years. 

"Never, we were close we talked all the time and we didn't keep secrets from me," he replied the upset one in his voice seeping through. "Never?" JJ asked confused, "JJ, Lauren told me everything from her first crush to her first kiss to her first time. We don't keep secrets," Spencer replied frustrated as his phone rang from his pocket. 

Spencer pulled his phone out noticing the caller ID 'Detective Halstead' confusion crossed his mind as he answered the call. "Detective?" Spencer answered confused, "Lauren's on her way to Med, she was shot in her apartment." Spencer froze at the words. "What? When? Is she okay?" Spencer asked bombarding the detective with questions. "We found her in her apartment 15 minutes ago, they just rushed her to the OR," the detective said as his voice shook. 

"I'll be there as soon as I can," Spencer said before he hung up the phone. "Lauren was shot in her apartment 15 minutes ago, she's on her way into surgery now," he replied causing shock to wash over their features. Hotch called Morgan to inform him and Prentiss to go back to the apartment and make sure nobody touch anything until they got there, even though Morgan wanted to go to the hospital to wait for any word on Lauren. 

Chicago Medical Center, Chicago Illinois

Within half an hour Spencer and JJ walked into the waiting room door of the hospital where the entire intelligence unit along with fellow officers from the 21st district were waiting for the news of their detective. The moment Spencer walked into the room he walked over to detective Halstead who was standing beside their team's tech analyst Mouse. "Any update?" he asked worried as Halstead and mouse looked up. "No, we can't get any word from the doctors yet," Mouse said. "I don't understand, she wasn't supposed to fly back until Friday morning, I was supposed to pick her up from O'hare," Halstead said still confused by what the team found when they got to Lauren's apartment. 

"Lauren Reid," Dr. Halstead said from the doorway with a tall dark haired man in scrubs. Spencer walked over to the ginger. "Dr. Reid this is Dr. Connor Rhodes," Dr. Halstead said introducing them. "Nice to meet you, So we managed to stop the bleeding and stabilize her but she's lost a lot of blood," the ginger said. "Can I see her?" Spencer asked them as they nodded, "She's still coming off the sedation from the operation but she should be awake in the next hour," Dr. Rhodes says as he led Spencer to a room. 

When he walked in his heart broke at the sight of Lauren laying unconscious in the hospital bed again. She looked so pale, however, what Spencer noticed were the bruises up her arms and around her throat. Spencer took her hand in his as he took a seat next to her bed fighting the urge to cry. Lauren woke up to the sound of machines beeping and Spencer's voice. "I should've seen the signs last year when you started distancing yourself, I'm sorry I didn't protect you better Lauren," Spencer said his voice shaking. 

"It's not your fault Spency," Lauren said softly looking at her brother who looked up at the sound of her voice and pulled her into a hug. "How are you feeling?" he asked her as he let go of their hug. "Like I ate a bullet," she replied laughing lightly only to groan in pain a little as an aching pain started forming in her lower abdomen. "What happened?" Spencer asked her, "I'm guessing Morgan told you I kicked them out of my apartment," Lauren said trying to ignore the pain that was getting more and more intense. Spencer nodded, "Not even 10 minutes after they left, I heard a knock on the door. I just thought they forgot something... Ughhh" Lauren groaned in pain as she cradled her abdomen. 

"Are you okay?" Spencer asked noticing her body language and how she was holding her abdomen. "What hurts?" he asks noticing the heart monitor and blood pressure machines spike a bit. Lauren took a shakey breath before a tearing pain went through her lower stomach causing her to cry out in pain. "Spencer, it hurts, please just make it stop, please, please" Lauren was laying in the fetal position hugging her stomach as tears streamed down her face. "I'm gonna go get Dr. Halstead," Spencer said with worry written on his face as he went to the door looking into the hall. 

"Dr. Halstead, It's Lauren," Spencer said causing the ginger to look up and lightly jog over to him. "Lauren, it's Will can you tell me what hurts?" the ginger asked as he put medical gloves on before walking over to the bed that the brunette was curled up in crying in pain. "my abdomen, please just make it stop please," Lauren cried. "I'm gonna pull the blanket off and just feel your stomach okay?" Dr. Halstead said and she felt the blanket get pulled off her and the room fell silent. 

Dr. Halstead and Reid froze when they saw the amount of blood on the hospital sheets. The ginger walked over to the doorway of the room. "Maggie, Page Dr. Rhodes and get him to meet me in the OR," the ginger said as a few nurses walked over and they wheeled Lauren out of the room, down the hall to an elevator taking her back up to the OR.
