{Previously: You smiled and took his hand}

You and Steve strolled side by side on the cement path in comfortable silence.

"So, you gonna tell me how you turned into Paul Bunyan over night?" You laughed as you stared into his sparkling blue eyes.

Steve just chuckled, "Well. The night before I told you I was leaving, I was approached by a German man at the recruiting office. He wanted to talk about my enlistment form and I was sure I'd be thrown in the slammer, but he actually offered me a position."

"Wow," you whispered.

"Yeah. That's not even the craziest party. Apparently the doctor was working on some serum that could enhance the physical qualities of a man. I was the first successful subject, and the last." Steve looked down after the last sentence.

"The doctor was killed by a Hydra agent." Your friend said in a low tone.

You tilted your head to the side, "Hydra?"

"Terrorist organization working with the Nazis. The head of it is this chuckle head named Johann Schmidt. He was actually the doctor's first subject." Steve replied.

"Wait, what? I thought you were-" his story was absolutely unbelievable.

Steve shook his head. "No I was the only successful one. I haven't met Schmidt personally, but the doctor said that he took the serum when it wasn't fully developed, and now he's not so right."

You walked in silence trying to absorb all of the information he just poured onto you. Yet, only one question lingered in the air.

"Have you heard from Bucky?"

It was barely a whisper and even though part of you hoped he didn't hear it, he did.

Steve shook his head, "You?"

You did the same.

The mood changed entirely and both of you just walked in silence some more.

After a while, Steve spoke up. "I met a gal!" He said excitedly.

You laughed, "Really? Tell me about her."

"Her names Peggy. She works for the SSR and was stationed at the base I was at before all of this," he grinned.

You beamed, "She sounds great, Steve."

Steve's smile fell, "Yeah, but I may never see her again."

"Aww I'm sorry Stevie, but hey I'm sure there are thousands of women in America lining up right now just dying to get the attention of the one and only Captain America!" You said theatrically.

He chuckled at your enthusiasm.

Steve bought you some coffee at a nearby diner before giving you a warm hug, "I've got to get back, but it was really great seeing you."

You smiled, "I'm going to miss you."

Steve pulled out of the hug and kissed you on the forehead, something he did often despite your relationship only being platonic.

"I'll miss you too."

Steve began walking away from you, but turned around after a few steps and pointed at you, "Don't forget to buy war bonds! Each one is a b-"

"Bullet in the barrel of your best guy's gun?" You interrupted him. "I heard."

The two of you laughed.

"See you, Dork." You waved.

"See ya, Princess." He saluted.
