Jungkook and Taehyung have been best friends for as long as Jungkook can remember. They were inseparable, a match made in heaven (or hell, some people would say), partners in crime. Jungkook has the fondest memories of Taehyung. All through his life, Taehyung has always been there, laughing next to him or comforting him when he cries.
They were never the best students, especially back in high school. They weren't the smartest because they couldn't honestly care less about whatever the teacher says in front of the class or whatever mark comes back with their exams, and neither were they the kindest pair. They're the jokers, the pranksters, the ones who always get into trouble, the ones who make other kids cry when their pranks become too much. They've had their fair share of scolding from teachers and even from their own parents, but they never cared because they were happy.
Jungkook remembers everything as if it all just happened yesterday. He remembers all the details on Taehyung's place whenever he would laugh or smile (all because of Jungkook, by the way - Jungkook takes a lot of pride in making Taehyung happy). Taehyung's lips would form an adorable smile, and Jungkook would always tease him about it. His cheeks would rise, and Jungkook would have this urge to pinch them because of how soft they look. His eyes would turn into slits, almost entirely hidden whenever he's laughing too hard because of a joke Jungkook would say.
And he remembers cutting classes with Taehyung, sneaking out of the campus to go to the nearest internet café so they could play the newest games. Jungkook would always beat Taehyung in those games. He lets Taehyung win sometimes, especially when Taehyung is pouting and complaining about how much he sucks at the game and how amazing Jungkook is. Jungkook hates seeing Taehyung sad (even if he's just pretending to be), so he intentionally loses sometimes, just so he would see Taehyung jump excitedly and boast about how he had beaten Jeon Jungkook in a game. It was all worth it.
Jungkook also remembers getting detention when they were caught trying to sneak out of the campus during school hours a week later. And it wasn't supposed to be in his fondest memories because detentions are boring, to be honest, but that was a special day to Jungkook.
Because that day, Jungkook realized that he's in love with Kim Taehyung.
There were a lot of hints even from years ago. Jungkook has always been fond of Taehyung, so he gets teased a lot by their other friends for treating Taehyung way differently from how he treats them. Jungkook just brushed it off as an exaggeration because Taehyung is his best friend, so they're definitely closer than the others.
But during that detention where they're forced to stay in the library and write three-page essays to repent, Jungkook realized that he's in love.
There wasn't any extraordinary event that made him realize so. It was just him and Taehyung inside the silent library when Jungkook's eyes landed on Taehyung's sleeping face, and he couldn't take his eyes off of him.
Taehyung still hasn't written anything on the paper is the first thing Jungkook noticed before letting his eyes rest on Taehyung's features.
Taehyung is beautiful, is the second thought that entered Jungkook's head.
There wasn't even anything new with Taehyung's looks back then. Jungkook had been seeing that same face every single day of his life. Taehyung didn't get a haircut; he didn't have any makeup on his face or whatever to alter his looks. He even has a slight drool on the corner of his lips from sleeping too comfortably with his face pressed against the table (and Jungkook is absolutely sure that his cheek would have this ridiculously bright red mark when he wakes up!).
But that doesn't change the fact the Jungkook fell in love with him right there and then. He's not entirely sure how it happened, but all that he knows is that his heart started beating differently for Taehyung from then on.
