Max
It's now Friday. Tonight is homecoming. I wish I could go with El, but she's going with Mike. Lucas has already asked me to go multiple times. Each time I've said no.
"Hey, Max!" My thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. I turn around, away from my locker, to see the shoulder-length brunette. Her face has a big grin on it.
"Hey, El!" I smile back at her.
"Are you going to the Snowball?" She asks me. Oh god.
"It's not the Snowball in high school. It's called homecoming," I explain to her.
"Oh. Are you coming to homecoming?"
"No. Are you?" I smile at her.
"Yeah, with Mike," she responds, skipping off.
I hate Mike so much. I just wish I could go to homecoming with El. She's perfect but with someone so annoying. Why not me?
I walk off to class, trying to forget about homecoming.
----------------------------------------------
Class finished after a long, excruciating hour. I'm currently walking to the cafeteria.
I walk into the cafeteria and meet the party at our usual table. I sit down next to Lucas. Dustin is on Lucas' right. Will is in between Dustin and Mike. El is next to Mike.
I glance over at El and smile at her. She smiles back and waves. I wave back.
"Hey, Max!" Lucas says, smiling at me.
"Hi," I respond.
There's an awkward silence after that until Mike breaks it.
"Who's going to homecoming?" Mike asks.
"I am," Will and Dustin say at the same time.
They both start arguing about who jinxed who first, but all I can pay attention to is Lucas.
"Are you going?" Lucas asks me for, like, the hundredth time.
"The answer is still no," I respond.
"I'm not," El announces.
"I thought we were going together!" Mike shouts. The look on his face was priceless.
"I dump your ass," El says, after a pause. She looks over at me. I smile at her, knowing that I'm the one who told her to say that a year ago.
Mike angrily gets up and leaves with Will following behind. I look over at Lucas.
"I'll go," I tell him.
"You will? Really?" He asks, surprised.
"Don't make me change my mind," I state.
"Okay," he whispers. I can see the smile on his face. I don't even want to go with him.
As soon as the bell rings, I get up to go to my next class. El catches up to me and walks beside me.
"You're going now?" She asks.
"You're no longer going?" I respond with a question.
"I might. I just don't want to go with Mike," she pauses, "I want to go with someone else."
"Yeah? Who's the lucky guy?" I ask.
"I don't want to say yet," she responds.
"Alright," I stop at my classroom, but El continues walking.
"Bye!" She shouts when she's already on the other side of the hall.
"Bye!" I shout back, smiling.
----------------------------------------------
When the school day ended, I met the party outside. Mike, Will, and Lucas were already there. Mike and Will were talking, but Lucas was standing there alone. I walk up to him.
"Hey," I say.
"Oh hi, Max! How are you?" He asks.
"I'm fine. Have you seen El?"
"No, why?"
"Just wondering," I respond. I want to talk to her about homecoming.
"Are you excited for homecoming tonight?" He asks, trying to make conversation with me.
"Kind of," I respond, looking around for El.
"I think Will is trying to convince Mike to go even though El isn't."
"Yeah?" I'm now 85% sure Will has a crush on Mike.
"Yeah. I think Will just wants someone to hangout with," Lucas explains.
"Something like that," I respond, and then finally spot the brunette. I run over to her.
"Hey, El!" I say.
"Hi," she responds, not making eye contact.
"Have you decided if you're going to homecoming? I decided I'm not," I tell her.
"Oh," she pauses, "yeah, I decided I was going to."
"Well, I hope you have a great time with that lucky guy," I say as I walk away, winking at her.
Why did I say that? I am going. What if she doesn't go now? And who is the lucky guy? Are they even a guy? No, he has to be. It's probably Mike still. I sigh and skate home.
----------------------------------------------
I'm currently looking in the mirror. I have a grey cocktail dress on, and my hair is in a french braid. I have an uncomfortable pair of heels on and a lot of makeup.
Would El like me like this? No. I have to stop thinking about her. Would Lucas like me like this? I hope not. I take one more glance in the mirror, and then Steve drives me to homecoming. The whole car ride, I ranted to Steve about El.
When we arrive, I look over at Steve.
"It'll be okay," he reassures me. I nod and get out of the car.
I walk inside and realize I'm a little late. I look around to try to find the party. I finally spot them. Mike and Will are sitting next to each other. They better dance tonight. I look to the left of them and see El and Lucas staring at me. El slowly starts walking toward me.
"Hey," she says.
"Hello," I say with a smile. Her hair is wavy, and she's wearing a beautiful light blue dress.
"I thought you said you weren't coming?" She questions me.
"I guess I changed my mind."
"Lucas has been waiting for you."
"Where's the lucky guy that I'm sure you're waiting for?" I ask her, ignoring what she just said.
"I guess not here," she sighs.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah."
I take her hand in mine, and we walk to the boys together.
"Hey, Max!" Lucas says.
"Hey. Where's Dustin?" I ask him.
"It seems he's not coming after all," he laughs.
"I guess not," I respond. A slow song starts playing. Before Lucas says anything, I go over to Mike and Will, still holding onto El's hand.
"Hey, guys," I say.
"Hey," Will responds.
"A slow song is on. If you guys want to ask someone out, now's the time," I tell them.
They both get up and walk to the bleachers. I swear if they don't dance, I'm murdering both of them.
"This might sound weird, but do you want to dance?" I ask El.
"Yes!" She excitedly says. I smile at her and drag her to the dance floor.
I put my hands around her neck. She puts her hands around my waist. My stomach immediately erupts into butterflies. We start dancing. I see Mike and Will come up toward us as we're dancing. They start dancing next to us. I give Will a smile.
I look El in the eyes.
And then I kiss her.
