Eleven

In two months, the Snowball will take place. My name is Jane 'Eleven' Hopper. I'm a pretty average human. I have shoulder-length brunette hair, brown eyes, a group of friends, an enemy, and the best boyfriend. As I said, I'm ordinary.

Now, you may be wondering who this enemy of mine is. I guess I shouldn't be too hard on her. She isn't my enemy but I do hate her a lot. Her name is Max. She has long, natural red hair and ocean blue eyes.

About a week ago, I was out sick, and after two days, I came back to school. I was looking for my boyfriend, Mike, until I found him in the gym with a new girl. I didn't know her name at the time but it was Max. She was skating around Mike on her skateboard. She was flirting with him, but Mike, a devoted boyfriend, ignored her.

I'm now standing in the second floor hallway staring at the upset-looking Max Mayfield. She is sitting next to her board. She brings that thing everywhere. What is upsetting her? Maybe I should go over and ask her what's wrong. No, I shouldn't. She tried to steal Mike. I made my way downstairs to the cafeteria.

Mike, Dustin, Will (my brother), and Lucas, who are my friends, are sitting at our customary corner table. I walk over to them and sit down next to Mike.

"Hey, El!" Mike says, as I sit down. I look him in the eyes and give him a genuine smile.

"Hey, Mike," I say with a huge grin. He leans over and quickly kisses my cheek. I could feel my cheeks heating up.

"Hey, El? Have you seen Max anywhere?" Lucas, Max's boyfriend, asks.

"No, I wouldn't be looking for her," I scoff.

"I'm sure she's making her way here," Dustin reassures him.

"I hope so," Lucas says worriedly. I probably should've told them I saw her, but I'm sure she'll be fine.

"You're not eating today, El?" After an uncomfortable silence, Will asked, realizing I wasn't eating.

"I'm not hungry," I say without looking at him, picking at my fingernails.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Mike look at Will, and Will shrug.

"What's wrong, El?" Mike asked in a calm voice.

"Max is upst-" I tried saying, but the cafeteria door slammed opened mid-sentence.

We all looked straight at the door at the same time. A redhead walked through with a skateboard and made her way over to us with everyone staring at her.

"Hey," she said, taking her seat next to Lucas. I was giving her an angry glare.

She looked over at me, locking her eyes into mine. We stared into each other's eyes for a long, uncomfortable ten seconds. I'm still giving her an angry glare.

"What's wrong with you?" Max asked with an irritated tone.

"Nothing," I mumbled in response. I get up to leave, but Mike pulls me back down right away.

"Be nice to her. I don't like her either, but it's Lucas' girlfriend," he whispers in my ear. I nod slowly, even though I probably won't take his advice.

"What's your next class, guys? Also hi Max," Dustin says, completely oblivious to everything just happened.

"El and I have English next," Will states.

"I've got P.E next," says Lucas.

"Dustin and I have Latin next," Mike responds.

"Drama class," Max says, in a bored voice.

"Latin's stupid and we're not stupid, so what's the point of taking it?" I question.

"It's a waste of time, if you ask me," Lucas remarks.

"Agreed," Max says in a quiet voice.

Just then, the bell rang.

"See you guys," Mike says, getting up and throwing away everyone's trash.

We all said our byes, and Will and I went off to English class. As we walking, an all too familiar voice from behind us said, "Where do you two siblings think you're going..."
