We arrived at the police station 10 minutes later than the others. We got out and head into the poorly maintained building. The police station wasn't as busy as I thought it would be. There were a few tired looking officers sat at their desks eating bags of crips and swirling coffee round in their white mugs. Glancing around the room, I saw the back of Billy slumped on a leather chair next to who was supposedly Hank Loomis, his dad. They both faced Sheriff Burke and Dewey who had serious faces. I hoped to God he would be ok. At this point I didn't care if he did kill Casey and Steve, I just wanted him to be ok.
Tatum looked around the room trying to work out where they were with Sydney. I spotted her sat in the corner and pointed her out. Sydney was sat on a chair, uncomfortably moving around. Tatum ran over to her and pulled a chair next to her. I stood by them both, unsure if I should sit the other side of Sydney or not. "It'll be alright, Syd." I said trying to reassure her. She shook her brunette hair and said: "How are you coping so well? It's fucking scary!" I shrugged my shoulders. I had no know idea how I was coping with it all. I just tried my best to bury the emotions and forget that they are there. The door opened, revealing Sheriff Burke and Dewey. They both came in, discussing the next steps they would take. "Hey Dewey, can we go home now?" Tatum interrupted her brother impatiently, after a long five minutes of the two officers secretly discussing the case. Dewey put her hand up to tell her to be quiet. "Hang on a sec." Sheriff Burke looked over at Sydney, still shaking form the shock. "She's staying with you?" He asked Dewey. "We haven't located her dad yet." Dewey explained. Tatum's face grew angry. "God damn it, Dewey!" She moaned, annoyed at her brother ignoring her. Dewey faced her directly, pointing his finger at her. "What did Mama tell you? When I wear this badge, you treat me like a man of the law." He hissed. Tatum rolled her brown eyes and stood up, pulling Sydney up with her. "I'm sorry, Deputy Dewey-boy but we're ready to go." She said confidently and began to head to the exit. Sheriff Burke huffed to Dewey. "Better to take the back entrance. Avoid the circus." He gestured to the opposite side of the room to a slightly hidden exit door. I grabbed Tatum and Sydney's sleeves and dragged them towards the right door.
We exited the station, guarded by Dewey and a few other officers. I cursed as we were suddenly surrounded by an array of reporters trying to get to both me and Sydney. We were both the latest news. Dewey spun around, thinking briefly of a backup plan. "I'll get the car. Wait here." He said firmly and left us. Someone gripped me by the sleeve of my coat and pulled me to the side. "Sorry- I thought it would be quieter here." I heard Sydney mumble to me and Tatum. I nodded, despite them not able to see me in the dark. There was a brief second and I heard a bustling noise of high heels on the concrete ground. Around the corner came Gale Weathers with her camera man Kenny. He fumbled around and put his camera on his shoulder, pointing it at me, Tatum and Sydney. Sydney's face tightened and I clenched my fist. This woman honestly wouldn't go away. "Some night. Are you alright?" Gale asked Sydney, trying to appear sympathetic towards her so she would let down her guard. Their eyes met with a cold angry stare, Sydney visibly shaking. "What happened?" Gale pushed further. I stood in front of Sydney, blocking Kenny's view of her. "She's not answering any questions. Just leave her alone." I snapped, pushing Gale gently away. Sydney patted my shoulder and stood back next to me, revealing herself to Kenny's live camera again. "It's fine, Kenzie. She's just doing her job. Aren't you Gale?" She said beginning to become more confident in facing the news reporter. Gale tried to smile but it appeared more like a grimace. "Yes, that's right." She replied, her voice sounding tense. Car headlights flooded the alley we hid down and Dewey pulled up in his police car. "How's the book?" Sydney remarked, not really caring what the answer she received was. "It'll be out later." Gale said, glancing over at Kenny to make sure he was recording. He nodded slightly and when she looked away flicked on the live switch. Bit of a shit camera man for journalism, I thought. "I'll look out for it." Sydney snapped at Gale, clenching her hands into a fist. "I'll send you a copy." Gale added, making Sydney clench her fists harder. I could feel the rage building up inside of her. I flung her backwards and once everyone, but Gale was out of the way I smacked my fist into Gale's smug face. She yelped loudly, clutching her nose. I pushed back at Dewey who was wrestling me into Tatum's car and looked over at Sydney. Her and Tatum were laughing hysterically, a look of relief spreading over Sydney's face. I laughed too; my anger outbursts had their benefits.
A/N: I'm literally on a roll with writing at the movement! Kinda short chapter sorry :)
