You studied Zoro from across the deck, watching him with deep focus. Everyone was just saying their goodnights to each other at the moment before disappearing back below deck, Zoro being the one who was on watch duty tonight. This was the perfect opportunity for you, because you had something you wanted to talk to him about, preferably alone. It was something that had been on your mind for a while now, and the confidence you needed to talk about it only came fleetingly. This was one of those moments you had that confidence, so you had to act on it while you still had it. After all, the topic on your mind was a bit of a difficult one to bring up, and you didn't want to come across as too rude considering how deeply you cared for him already.

Eventually the deck had cleared of life, Zoro already beginning his ascent to the crows nest above. It was just you left on the deck now, so you patiently waited a few extra minutes after Zoro disappeared into the crows nest before you began to follow after him. If you showed up right behind him, you might come off as a bit weird, and your question was already weird enough. No need to startle the poor bugger mid ascent.

You made quick work of the climb and poked your head into the crows nest, finding Zoro on the far side of the room doing the typical thing that one would expect him to be doing: a bottle of sake pressed to his lips and a large weight in his free hand. The sound of your arrival made him freeze in this position, the bitter sting of alcohol starting to get at his tongue where he held the bottle to his mouth, eyes locked on you while you crawled up the ladder.

"Heya! Mind if I come hang out here for a bit and take the night watch with you? I'm not really tired, and you're good company." You greeted nonchalantly as you always did.

"You are the most difficult one to get to agree on doing night watch, and now you come up here voluntarily?" Zoro huffed, finally pulling his sake away from his face. "Sure. Why not."

"You seem surprised. Why is that?" You snorted.

"Because you're always the first one to pass out, loser."

"Woooooow." You groaned in mock offense.

Am I saying anything that is currently incorrect?" He challenged you.

"Hah! Nope~. You're right on that one, but tonight I'm restless. Your company is always appreciated." You remarked, approaching a rack of weights. "So, how about we shoot the shit and lift some weights instead of talking about my eternal sleep schedule, hey? The seas are calm. I doubt there'll be anything of concern for us to worry about tonight."

"I'm already way ahead of you on that one."

Easing into conversation was a smart move on your part. The buzzing thoughts in your mind soon quieted down for a moment as you engaged in mindless banter with Zoro, easing your nerves while you curled weights and rambled on about current events together. It was nice to just talk nonsense for once and make fun of the state of the world. Zoro even cracked open another bottle of sake to share with you while you talked, taking sips between sets like the fools that you were.

Eventually you both became a bit tipsy and had to give up on the weights for your own safety, the conversation becoming quite a nonchalant and mindless one. You leaned up against the wall nearby and gazed out at the stars in the sky while Zoro took a seat on the floor to finish his current bottle of sake, eager to get started on the next. It was such a nice change of atmosphere that you nearly forgot the entire reason you came up here.

"Hey, wanna go up on the roof?" You asked out of the blue.

Zoro looked at you with a confused expression, once again holding a sake bottle near his lips. "Ah, why?"

"The stars look nice, don't you think? There's nothing crazy happening for once, so why not enjoy the night sky worry free?" You replied.

Your request was a bit unusual, but so was your unexpected company anyway. Zoro figured that something must be on your mind, and his curiosity told him that it might be worth it to see what was up. You were normally quite aloof like he was, so it was within reason for him to be initially concerned.
