In the past week, Sue was periodically going back to her apartment and grabbing clothes and other items like her hairbrush, some fragrances and a couple of books. She was packing light while she stayed at Emily's place because she didn't want to be intrusive. Sue was very much aware that Emily didn't see it in that way and continuously would assure her that she's not overstepping by staying at her place. And though Sue believed it, she still couldn't help but feel the way she was feeling because she was accustomed to being the burden in everyone's life. Or so she thought. That's how she felt, really. Joshua had treated her like she is dirt, her own sister won't talk to her, and her and her mother had a poor relationship. It's been embedded within her that she is some kind of bother to society and to be honest, it was hard for her to shake.
She was luckily able to dodge Jay the last couple of times she had come through the place since he started at a new job that required him to be in the office. She thought she got lucky again, but as she was putting the last couple of shirts she was packing into her backpack, she heard the door of the apartment squeak open and the sound of keys dropping on the table next to the door.
She closed her eyes and sighed, "Shit." She whispered. She quickly zipped up her backpack and tossed it over her shoulder—quietly making her way out of the room.
"Sue?" Jay called out, his voice getting closer as they both were heading in each other's direction.
She braced herself—her hand clenching around the strap of her bag. She didn't want to face Jay... it would be a lie to say that Sue wasn't scared of him. And though she could tell by the tone of his voice that he wasn't drunk—the love that she had for him was so far gone.
"Leaving so soon?" He asked, raising his eyebrow. He outstretched his arm in front of Sue as to block her from passing him. "You don't want to hear about my new job, babe?"
Sue rolled her eyes and shook her head, "You need a reality check, honestly Jay."
He chuckled and grinned, "Do I?" He kept his arm in place and eyed Sue up and down, "What type of reality check do I need? That the most beautiful girl on the planet is mine?"
Sue scoffed and couldn't help but let out a loud 'ha' at his comment, "Please, Jay. You and I both know you don't think that. Now, if you'll excuse me—."
She stepped forward, but Joshua put his hand up, "Mm mm." He said, giving her a hard stare. "How do you know what I think?"
Sue laughed again, "I know you probably don't remember this since you were completely drunk off your ass, but you have torn me down and belittled me time and time again, Jay." She said, her voice cracking now. Don't cry, Sue. She thought. "It—it's over." She breathed out, sobbing as she shook her head. "You and I—we're over, Jay."
His mouth fell slightly open, a look of shock growing on his face. It didn't take long for Sue to notice the outrage starting to form. He started breathing heavily, shoving his hands in his pockets with clenched fists as he paced through the small hallway that they were conversing in.
"Sue." He said, his voice panicked as he continued to pace. He stopped in front of her and ran his hands through his hair—nerves setting in high within the sober version of him. "Please don't say that. I—I won't let you leave me. I'm a damn good boyfriend. Let me prove it."
Sue put her hand up and shook her head, "My decision is already made. I can't take it anymore. You're sober now, but what about two hours from now? Then that's when you start coming after me. I won't live like this anymore, Joshua. I—I deserve better."
