...
Nearly a month had gone by since Sue and Emily went to Figs and had that conversation. Sue was still living in her place with Joshua, but she was spending a lot more time at Emily's place than her own these days.
The girls were getting closer and Sue never thought that could even be possible, but it was. The bond between Emily and her was binding even stronger than it had already been. Sue felt comfortable with Emily... she felt safe. Emily made her laugh until her cheeks hurt from cheesing too hard. Emily had this gentle way about her that made Sue feel safe, but also had this dominance in her persona that, well, also made Sue feel protected.
She was getting closer to ending things with Joshua, but it was still really difficult. She knew it was going to be a messy breakup with how he's been acting with her—mean, insensitive, and straight up narcissistic. But Sue has had enough, and she was finally hitting that breaking point of no return. She was trying to ease herself away slowly, especially since his drinking had been even more out of control lately.
It was nearing midnight on a Friday night and the girls had just rolled into Emily's apartment after coming back from The Sevens; a small bar down the road. They met up with a group of their friends and Emily's sister and had such a fun night. Honestly, it was the most fun Sue had had in a very long while and she didn't even think about Joshua once. It was almost as if he were non-existent in that moment and the more time she spent away from him, the more she felt like he wasn't a part of her life. But he was—and he was still very much present. Every day that passed though, Sue was getting closer to officially ending things. She was trying to get her own life happenings situated before she called it quits and she knew it wasn't going to be an easy break up.
Emily stumbled across the living room and chuckled as she bumped into the coffee table before melting into the couch. She sighed and looked up at Sue, "Shit." She laughed, closing her eyes as she tilted her head back into the cushion. "I'm so drunk, Susie. I don't even know how I made the walk home in one piece."
Sue chuckled as she shook her jacket off and let it fall to the floor. She was also very drunk. She walked over slowly to the couch before sitting next to Emily, "You know—I was thinking the same thing..." Sue started, grinning as she looked up at the ceiling. She turned her head so she was facing Emily, and Emily did the same—looking right back at Sue as both of their heads sunk back into the cushion of the couch. Sue continued, "But then it dawned on me that we were both dragging each other back the whole time."
They both laughed as they continued to stare at each other with drunken eyes. Emily glanced down at Sue's lips for just a moment before she moved her vision back up and kept them locked on Sue's eyes again. The glance from Emily was quick, but it wasn't unnoticed by Sue—she noticed it instantly and her stomach knotted up the second she caught Emily looking at her lips.
Emily cleared her throat and adjusted so she was a bit more slouched into the couch, "Well, thank you for getting me home in one piece, Susie."
"I should be thanking you. I would have sprained my ankle falling off that curb if you didn't catch me." Sue said, her voice a little slurred.
"Mmm—touché." Emily hummed, smirking as she closed her eyes. She sighed, "God, I'm tired."
Sue nodded and closed her eyes, her voice languid as she spoke, "Me too."
Emily bit her lip as she stared at Sue. Her eyes remained closed while Emily really took her in—her eyes scanning over her face and once again gravitating toward Sue's lips. Emily quickly caught herself again and moved her eyes to scan along Sue's jawline and then back up to her face. She always thought Sue was beautiful—inside and out. As they got older, Emily admired Sue's beauty even more—respectfully, but also quietly as she didn't want to ever make things 'weird' between them. Emily came out years ago during high school and there was always feelings that lingered there when it came to Sue, but Emily always thought Sue would never see her in that way, so she never ended up pursuing anything.
