"Why are you so stubborn?" Two days after Charlie's party, you're sitting in a café with Meg talking about your lives and her possible pregnancy. There's nothing that prompts you to understand what she's talking about. It comes almost out of the blue while discussing other things. But there's a certain edge to her voice that hints to you what she's speaking of. Or maybe it's just the fact that you know each other all too well that you don't really need to be specific during your conversations.
"I- I don't get it, what are you talking about?" Your voice shakes a little at the end of the sentence. She has been giving you a nasty look ever since you sat down. It's making you feel exposed, all of your secrets out there, specifically about your hidden relationship with the Winchester.
"Come on," she says your name teasingly, "we both know what's going on here. Or more like, what's going on behind closed doors in your shared home."
You open your mouth to protest against her words, but the glance she gives you stops you in your tracks. You know better than to keep lying to her. "You're right," you say, "I'm not gonna ask you how you know because I understand we weren't exactly secretive during Charlie's party."
"No, you weren't, particularly with the whole Crazy Cassie thing going on. But that's ok," there's a small smile on her face, "if I'm being honest, I kinda saw it coming."
"What do you mean you saw it coming? Ever since I moved in with him? You thought we would hook up or something?" Was it about you being roommates that Meg thought you would eventually become a thing?
She laughs in your face. "No, I saw it coming long before that. I mean, the attraction was pretty obvious ever since you both met."
You cannot believe her words, "back in college?"
"Yes! Didn't you know? Dean was totally in love with you."
Is Meg talking about the same Dean? You cannot really comprehend her words. It doesn't make sense to the image you used to have of Dean Winchester. I mean, the male slut in love with someone? But then again, isn't he with you right now?
You can only murmur, "how?"
"Oh my God," she laughs like she's having the time of her life. "Don't tell me he hasn't mentioned it yet!" Meg seems to take pity on your expression because she explains, "the reason why Castiel and I met was because Dean was totally obsessed with you in the first place. All of those times Cas and Dean approached us? It wasn't because Cas wanted to talk to me, it was because Dean could keep his eyes off of you. I mean, sure, eventually, Cas and I started to like each other, but in the beginning, it was all because of you." Meg isn't keen on showing sweet-like emotions unless it's serious or necessary. So the softness of her speaking only adds more truth to her words. Learning the truth, though, it's no less shocking.
Meg let you go home shortly after that conversation. You kept being distracted by her confession. Never in your life would you have thought that Dean had a thing for you back in college. He was a complete womanizer in your eyes, and all of his flirting appeared to be no more than a game for you. What would have happened if you had given him a chance to prove that his interest was real? It's too late to think about it now, but it's a nice notion to consider. Maybe you would have been together sooner if you hadn't wasted your time in mind games and petty hatred.
You close the door softly behind you when you enter your home. Dean is waiting by the sofa with a magazine in his hands. He looks up the moment you step into the living room. There must be something in your face that betrays your feelings because he instantly catches onto it. He puts his reading down and pats the sofa by his side. Your approach without hesitation.
"How was it? Did Meg give you too much trouble?" One of his hands finds its way to your leg, and he starts rubbing in circles over your jeans. The gesture's so soothing that you lean into him, your head resting on his shoulder.
