As I slowly got used to the bitter antiseptic smell of the hospital, I felt myself letting out an exhale. It felt like I had been keeping my breath in, suffocating myself. My hands felt rough as I washed them with water. I decided to go to the bathroom before going home, just to make sure I don't look too foreign when my father picks me up from the hospital. The bathroom looks pristine, its white tiles shimmer as the light bounces off it. The soft mush of soap against my hands felt oddly soothing. I sigh and put my hands under the running water. Pristine and cold.
I looked in the mirror as I dried my hands off. My hair was a mess, tangled and disordered. My eyes were puffy and tired. I noticed the eye bags that weren't there before. God it's only been 3 hours and I look like I haven't slept in years.
I wiped my right hand on my skirt and reached to touch my neck. A white bandage covered the cut from before. It hurts to swallow. It feels like trying to swallow a prickly plant, as if something is cutting the inside of my throat. I'm guessing the cut wasn't that simple. The bandage physically felt rugged and harsh yet it felt secure. It's just a simple scar, it's fine.
It's your fault.
I shake my head and exhale. Oh shut up. I pull the door and swiftly make my way to the ward. The bustle of the hospital was everywhere. The sound of conversation, clicks and clacks from the old computers, the constant beeping and that one child crying. My head pounded, I quickly ignored it and walked into the ward. I heard talking when I walked in. I saw Michael surrounded by his family. I couldn't help but smile.
"Looks like they couldn't wait?" I chuckled. They all turned around in sync and each face had a different reaction. Evan gasps and Elizabeth doesn't hold back from hugging my leg.
"Y/N! I MISSED YOU!" She squeals as her embrace gets tighter. I laughed and put my hand on her back. "I missed you as well," I sighed. My gaze follows Evan. He isn't like his sister, rather a complete opposite.
"Hello Y/n. I'm glad that you're okay" He showed a small grin. I nodded and thanked him. Mrs Afton gives me a smile and pulls me into her arms. I was taken back. My bones feel hollow in her hug. I held back a sob as I dug my head deeper, I needed this. I won't lie. My eyes stung but I bit my lip to try to shut down the feelings.
"I'm so pleased to see that you're alright. Michael told me what happened. I can't thank you enough" She smiled sadly. Her eyebrows creased as she looked at my neck. I shook my head to reassure her. I feel like I lost my voice.
"No need to thank me" I tried to speak but my voice felt restrained. I inhaled and felt a sharp throb in my chest. Cmon not now.
I saw William from afar, speaking to the same nurse from before. He nods to her and they both part. He starts walking over and sees me. "Goodness Y/n. It's refreshing to see that you're doing better than this one here" He smirks and tilts his head to Michael.
Michael gives him a scoff before crossing his arms. "Father.." He looked away embarrassed. I gave an amused face before I quickly replied.
"I know right! Who would've known what had happened if I wasn't there" I shook my head, thinking about it. I didn't even save him. Ha! He saved me anyway.
William looked at his watch and nodded to Clara. "Y/n, need a ride home?" He looks at me. "Oh no no! My father should be coming soon, I messaged him from before" I put a hand up shaking it. I thanked him for the offer.
"Are you sure? We can take you home now" Clara nodded, holding Evans hand. Elizabeth added if I can join for a sleepover to which Evan shook his head, crushing her dreams.
