"Come on George, pick up!" He shouted through a whisper at George's voicemail.
He was pacing quietly through the room. John was braced against him; his little legs wrapped tightly around his dad's waist; head on his shoulder. He began to twitch and whimper at the disturbance.
"Shhh. It's okay, go back to sleep buddy" He soothed the boy, patting his back gently to lull him back to sleep.
Blowing air from his cheeks, he pushed redial for the 9th time; watching as the white digits trailed with one another in a line before the receiver activated.
It rung 4 times before a voice came to the other end.
"Hello?" George answered shortly, sounding as if he was eating something.
"George, listen to me, We're at the hospital. I need you to come here and watch John for me until the doctor tells us what's going on" He whispered louder in a heap of rushed sentences.
"Why are you at the hospital?" George choked, concerned "Is Amy okay?"
"I'll explain soon. Just get here as fast as you can" The phone clicked off.
Adjusting John in his arms, he sighed. She was lying in the bed next to him; her breathing even as her chest rose and fell.
After the EMT's had rushed her into the entrance, Amy had been taken into a room to be examined. 30 minutes later they wheeled her into the room they were currently occupying. Once they hooked up the machines, and IV's were inserted, a nurse had given her some kind of sedative he'd never heard of for the pain and now she was fast asleep.
10 minutes passed before his pocket vibrated alerting him of George's arrival. Continuing the rhythm of stroking John's back lightly, he walked out of the room quietly and down the hallway.
"I'm here" George shouted out of breath as he began jogging into the waiting room. He watched Ricky's uneasy expression when Kathleen entered into the hospital a few steps behind him. "I was with Kathleen when you called"
Ricky nodded in understanding before speaking. "She's sleeping. They gave her some kind of sedative to relieve the pain"
Kathleen touched George's shoulder gently; her purple clutch tight in her palm. "George I can call a cab I don't want to upset anyone here"
"No, it's okay. John might calm down a little bit if he sees some familiar faces." Ricky jostled his sleeping son
"What is going on?" George asked more concerned
"We don't know, Dr. Roe hasn't gotten here yet and the doctor here is with another patient. They're talking about running some more tests when she wakes up but nothing is concrete yet. They want to wait until the sedative wears off before taking anything further."
"So it's a waiting game?"
"Pretty much"
"Well should I call Anne? Or Nora or Margaret or-"
Ricky shook his head, "No. Not yet anyway. Let's just wait it out for awhile. The last thing Amy needs is a bunch of people crowding in here" handing John to his grandpa before departing back down the hallway

He opened the big door slowly in fear of waking her. The room was still dark except for the small lights from the machines.
"Hey you" He whispered through the dark after walking over to the bed to see that she was awake.
She sat up groggily, wiping her eyes with her hand, "How long was I asleep?"
