45 minutes had passed since Amy's water had broken, and it hadn't been the greatest or most pleasant of times in that hospital room - for anyone.
"Ughhhh" She screamed clutching her left hand tight against her stomach while a nurse held a small pink plastic bin up to her face. *Hugghh* She dry-heaved again against the bin; fingers bunching tight against Ricky's right hand. "Ughhhh"
He squeezed her hand and gently rubbed her back as she heaved and groaned with each new contraction for the past half hour. Pushing a strand of hair that had fallen out of her messy bun, that she begged him to help her with, he placed it behind her ear.
"The contractions are coming closer together, it shouldn't be much longer" A dark haired nurse declared, monitoring Amy as she choked and coughed up air.
Shouldn't be much longer turned into another 26 minutes of waiting. Loud and agonizing waiting.
She was lying down on the bed with her eyes closed, moaning and groaning as the agony intensified.
He rested his head on the back of the chair across the room; shaking his foot back and forth fiercely, while his eyes let go off all the tears he was bottling up behind his eyelids. It was dark outside, the street lights from the parking lot giving off a dim, yet, comforting glow. He looked at her again; her breathing had evened a little but the moaning still continued. Her eyes closed in an attempt to somehow relieve the pain.
There was a small knock on the cracked door. "Up for a visitor?" George popped his head inside, whispering through the dark. John was nestled against him.
"George I don't that's such a great ide-"
"No." She mumbled, shifting her position slightly, "No I want to see him."
George stepped into the room, flipping on one of the lights. "You sure?" Amy looked at Ricky before nodding.
He placed John on the floor, letting go of his hand. "Go ahead" He urged, motioning with his hands to walk forward.
John's eyes stared back at his grandpa in worry that he wasn't supposed to keep walking. He stilled shortly after taking 5 steps. His eyes wandered around the room in fear of all the machines.
Amy was waiting for him, coaxing him along with her hand. He took a few more steps before she grabbed her stomach again, letting out a scream, "Ahhhhhh!"
John's eyes became wide in terror when he saw his mom doubled over and screaming. Quickly running back to the safety of his grandfather, he buried his head in George's legs, screeching with sobs, arms outstretched, begging to be picked up. He took the hysterical toddler out in the hallway, closing the door behind him.
She covered her face with her hands, "It's okay Amy" Ricky comforted, kissing his wife's head
"No it's not Ricky! I just made my own son cry!" Amy cried behind her hands and sniffled.
"He's just scared. He doesn't understand what's going on. I'll go talk to him"
George was a few feet down the hallway trying his best to get John to calm down. It didn't work. His crying intensified the more George tried to soothe him. He was tired.
"Look, here comes daddy" George pointed out, drawing John's attention to the figure walking towards them. John's fingers were in his mouth, as he cried.
"D-d-da-ddyyy!" He slobbered through tears, releasing his fingers from his teeth to outstretch his thin little arms.
Ricky took him out of George's grasp, and sat down on the desolate chair in the hallway, pressing John against him, "Hey, hey it's gonna be okay"
