**1945**
I listened.
With my eyes closed, I listened for any sound that might help me decide how much danger I was truly in. A slow dripping sound off to the right, a scurry from what I assumed was a rat, but I couldn't hear the men. Slowly I opened my eyes, immediately met with continued darkness.
I was laying on a concrete floor, in a tall cage. Around me, from what I could vaguely make out in the dark, was bars. The ground was damp, making it cold to the touch. I shivered, a coolness nipping at me. My toes and fingers felt frozen, as the heat in my body migrated to my torso to keep my important organs warm.
My heart began to race.
The last thing I could remember was the dark eyes of the men who had attacked me. I couldn't remember where I had been, or what they had done, just their eyes. With my heart racing, I began to breath heavily as panic set in.
What were they going to do to me?
I stood up on shaky legs, as my eyes adjusted to the darkness surrounding me. With a wobbly step, I made way to the barred door, gripping the cold metal in my hands for balance. There was other cages like mine near by, but I couldn't tell if anyone was in them.
"H-hello?" I asked in a hoarse voice. The sound echoed in the empty room, bouncing back at me. I let out a soft whimper. "Hello?" I asked again, a bit louder, preying someone would hear. I didn't want to be alone. I cried when I was met once again with silence. Warm tears welled in my eyes, cooling off the second they touched the air. I wiped them with the back of my hand, then wiped my hand on the tulle dress I was wearing. "Please." I begged in a sob. "Please somebody help." It echoed in the room, once again bouncing back at me. I hugged myself, as I slid back down the bars to sit on the ground. "Anybody." I cried once more in barely a whisper.
A shiver ran up my spine as I hugged myself on the ground. I brought my knees up to my chest, and wrapped my bare arms around them, huddling to create more body heat. I buried my head in my knees, breathing heavily. The front of my legs, which were bare, felt cold to the touch. The heels I wore offered no warmth to my feet, and my dress barely covered my shoulders.
I would die of hypothermia.
A cough echoed in the room, making me jump. It was a masculine sound, coming from the right. I strained my eyes to see who it'd come from. He coughed again, then groaned like he was in pain. I swallowed a small lump that had formed in the back of my throat, as I let myself go and crawled towards the barred wall opposite me.
"H-hello?" I stammered out in barely a whisper. He groaned again, before I could hear shuffling around, like he was sitting up.
"Hello?" He asked, his voice hoarse, and in pain. "Who's there?" He added.
"My n-names Tr-Trace." I shivered out, my teeth involuntarily chattering. At the wall, I gripped the bars once more, looking through them. I sat on my knees, feeling them ache in pain from the concrete below me.
In the darkness, I could vaguely make out the shape of a man. He was sitting against the wall opposite the one we shared. His arm was across his body, like he was holding himself in pain. His legs were out stretched in front of him. With no light, I couldn't make anything else out though.
"Trace?" He clarified, his voice still sore sounding. "I'm James." He added.
"Do you know where we are James?" I asked meekly, finding a small ray of comfort talking to him.
"An underground HYDRA bunker." He answered, then coughed.
"HYDRA?" I asked, confused. He hummed.
"Bad guys." He clarified weakly. I pressed my lips together, resisting the urge to respond sarcastically. This clearly wasn't the time.
