Chapter 6

**2012**

I ducked low, sliding on my knees as I avoided a strong fist coming towards me. Getting back to my feet, I swung around, throwing my own punch. My opponent side stepped, but my leg swept under him, knocking him to the ground with a thud. I towered over him, punching down towards his face. He moved down, my fist making contact with the mat we were training on. He grabbed one of my legs and pulled me down. I twisted my body as I fell, to land on my back.

He crawled onto me immediately, and began punching towards my face. I brought my arms up, blocking three blows, before twisting my hips, and rolling our position, now on top. I punched him, landing a hard one to the temple. He stared at me in a daze for a moment, as I reeled up to punch him a second time.

"That's enough." A man said from the side of our training area. I lowered my fist, and stood up, offering my hand to my opponent. The man took my hand slowly, still trying to get a hold on himself. "You're getting better." Agent Phil Coulson said. He had been watching us train, making notes and paying close attention to my technique. I turned to him, taking a small white towel out his hands.

"I would hope so." I sighed, dapping the towel on my forehead. "I've been practicing relentlessly for two months."

"Not that you need the practice. You're able to easily beat our best agents." Coulson said, watching me still as I dried my face.

"You know it's not the agents here I'm usually fighting." I muttered. "Besides, all this practice and I'm still only a fraction as good as I need to be." I added with a sigh. He nodded slowly, trying to understand.

"You'll be ready when he's woken again." Coulson tried to assure me. I pressed my lips together.

"Maybe." I said quietly.

It'd been roughly 70 years since I had last been with James. The wound he left me with ended up not being entirely fatal, as the unnatural healing from the super soldier serum saved me. I found it ironic, that the thing HYDRA had forced into me, ended up being my saviour, especially as they were the ones that wanted me dead.

After I'd healed, I left the apartment I had with Bucky, and found Howard Stark. I knew that he, out of everyone I knew, would have been able to help me. After the initial shock of the situation wore off for him, he called his friend, Peggy Carter to come and help decide what needed to happen next.

I had had a very confusing and action packed 70 years. The first decade or so was spent in a Cyro sleep. It was a tall cylinder pod that Stark had created. The three of us had decided it was important that I was around when James was, and figured the best way to guarantee that, was if I was on ice. I was woken in the early 60's, shortly after SHIELD had been founded. Peggy had brought me in as an agent, though my existence had been classified.

Not many people knew I was even there, save for Peggy and Stark. Just as only a handful of people truly knew of James's survival. He had been brought out to assassinate JFK. When word reached Peggy, she woke me up, and they prepared me to intercept, and try to bring Bucky back.

I was successful on stopping the first assassination attempt, and intercepted. Though, when I came face to face with the Winter Soldier after a decade, he'd changed. The new torture HYDRA had been using on Bucky caused him to forget who he was, even when he broke their hold. He forgot who I was, unable to fully place me. Though, even despite that, the Winter Soldier always hesitated when fighting me. He could never bring himself to take the killing blow.

I knew Bucky was in there somewhere.

"Agent Barnes." Coulson started, looking at me with a soft expression. I had originally met Phil when he first joined SHIELD. The winter soldier had been activated, and I was woken. Coulson had been trusted to keep my secret, and came to help along side Nick Fury. The two of them, Maria Hill and the official SHIELD council were the only ones completely aware of my existence.
