CHAPTER 5: LUNCH

My arms tremble as I step out of the lunch line, faced with a lot of people sitting and talking, since all four high-school grades eat at the same time. It's, at last, the most frightening time of day for a new student——lunch. I glance around at all of the students in the cafeteria. I'm able to instantly find some of my classmates amongst the crowd. It seems that everyone's separated into cliques——Eren, Armin and Levi are all at one table, while Itachi, Deidara and Hidan——who I didn't meet earlier——are at another. Then there's Tengen and Sanemi joined by Jean Kirstein, which is honestly no surprise. Oh, and the lovebirds, Obanai and Mitsuri, are all by themselves, cuddled up. But out of all these options of who to join, the safest one seems to be Neji and Giyuu, who are eating quietly as far away from the others as possible.

As I make this decision, I'm startled by the feeling of someone tapping on my shoulder. I turn around to see Tohru Honda, accompanied by Yuki, and surprisingly, Tomoe as well. They must make-up another friend group in our grade.

"Hey, Y/N!" Tohru greets cheerfully, "I was wondering if maybe you'd like to sit with us?"

I feel my expression soften at her offer and nod a single time.

"Sure," I accept, "Thanks for inviting me."

She giddily grabs my arm and leads me to their table, which has six chairs, two left unoccupied.

I take a seat across from Yuki and next to Tohru and Tomoe.

I can't help but stare at the two boys for a short moment——they're both so gorgeous.

Although, I wonder——in "Fruits Basket", there was another boy named Kyo, who was Tohru's romantic interest. Where could he be?

"He's late," Yuki mumbles, "His class must have gone late."

"That's what he gets for flunking tenth grade last year," Tomoe replies bitterly, daintily sipping his tea, "That idiot."
Tohru frowns at the both of them.

"Guys," she whines, "Don't be too hard on him, okay?"

"Tomoe, didn't that friend of yours also fail sophomore year?" Yuki questions before taking a bite of his food.

I can't help but chuckle a bit as Tomoe rolls his eyes.

"He's not my friend," he states flatly.

Just then, as if right on cue, rock music begins to echo through the overhead speakers. I glance around, confused as to why this is happening.

"What's going on?" I whisper to Tohru as everyone stands up, especially the female students in different grades than us, in an excited frenzy.

"They're here," she sighs with a gentle smile on her face.

My eyes widen as the cafeteria's double doors are thrown open and two shadowy figures step into the light, revealing themselves to be none other than Kyo, who I was just wondering about, and Kurama, the pop-star Tomoe has an ongoing rivalry with. As a matter of fact, it's Kurama's song playing over the speakers right now.

Girls practically throw themselves at the handsome boys, following them with their needy eyes as they walk directly toward our table and occupy the two empty seats. Kurama removes a remote from his pocket and clicks it once, immediately shutting off the blaring music.

"Hey, Guys," he says coolly, propping his feet up on the table, even though everyone's eating.

Meanwhile, Kyo gives Tohru a kiss on the cheek, causing her to blush lightly.

"Hi, Kyo," she whispers timidly.

I can't help but grin at them——they're so cute together.

Kurama notices me and his brow furrows.

"Who's she?" He asks.

"She's a new student in our grade," Tomoe answers, "But you would already know that had you not been forced to repeat sophomore year."

Kurama clenches his jaw.

"You know what, you stupid fox?! I was busy working! You know I have to focus on my career!"
Tomoe's eyes dim.
"Why must you always make so much noise?" He complains, "It's quite irritating."
Without another word, he simply sips his tea yet again, irking Kurama to no end. The pop-star faces me instead.

"I'm Kurama, by the way, but you probably already know that. What's your name, Darling?"
"It's Y/N," I respond, still appalled by how many girls are losing their heads all around us.

One of them approaches Yuki with a flower in hand.

"H-hi, my prince," she says shyly, "I bought you this flower."
Yuki, being the kind-hearted person he is, accepts it with profound thanks.

It seems that these four guys quite popular with the ladies.

"Tomoe!" Another girl shouts even though she's close-by, "You're the most gorgeous thing ever!"
I narrow my eyes at her comment. For some reason, it makes my blood boil.

"He's not a thing!"  I exclaim without hesitation, "He's a person, just like you and me! As a matter of fact, what you're all doing right now is very disrespectful! These four are just trying to enjoy their lunches in peace, and you keep bothering them!"

As everyone around us falls silent and gawks at me with disbelief, I instantly cover my mouth, in shock of what I just did.

Great! It's only my first day and I'm already causing a scene!

But I couldn't help it. When something irritates me, I'm quick to say so, because I have a very short fuse.

The girls who had been surrounding our table, practically suffocating the boys, scoff at me before reluctantly returning to their respective seats.

My table-mates, however, all have smiles on their faces. And I can't help but return them when Tomoe sighs of relief.

"Thank you, Y/N," he says, "I've gotten so used to it that I don't have the will to fight back anymore."
The others nod in agreement, except for Kurama, who I think enjoys the attention a bit too much.

I feel my face heat up as Tomoe tucks a piece of my hair behind my ear.

He's so close, and so beautiful... I can't hardly blame those girls for being head over heels for him.

"W-what was that for?" I ask, stammering.

"It wasn't slicked back into place——It's been bothering me for quite some time now," Tomoe responds, "You really should pay more attention to that unruly hair of yours."

Kurama elbows Tomoe in the ribs, causing a vein to pop out of his forehead.

"I never thought you, of all people, could actually flirt, Tomoe!"

I blush at his words.

"I wasn't flirting," Tomoe replies calmly, "I could never have any romantic feelings toward this girl."
Damn... That was harsh.

I sulk for brief a moment before popping a bite of food into my mouth.

He really should be more careful... Or one of these days he's going to lead someone on.
