The news of an Ever and a Never being together had been rumored all around both schools. It was huge news that there was going to be a trial by tales.

"I was starting to think you had forgotten about me." Beatrix stood underneath a huge tree, staring forward at Alwyn who walked up to her.

Alwyn placed a mischievous smile on himself while looking at the girl, "You're out past curfew. That's breaking a rule."

Beatrix rolled her eyes, with a sigh, "All the rules have been broken since those readers got here. Curfew is hardly anything now."

Alwyn was unsurprisingly at the School of Good as one of the students from each school were doing the trial in the forest. All the staff were gone as the trial was important. Most students were in the main room too, awaiting their return. So, this was the perfect chance for Alwyn to roam the School of Good.

"Tedros is going to get himself killed in that forest," Beatrix spoke with annoyance in her tone as she looked toward the direction of where the forest was though they weren't close to it.

Alwyn sighed as he turned his head to her, "They can survive for a few minutes. I grew up on worst grounds."

"That's because you are worse than any creature out there." Beatrix scoffed at him.

Alwyn proudly smiled. "Thank you."

Beatrix tilted her head at him with a serious look, "I wasn't complimenting you."

Alwyn leaned off from the tree, "You know, we could always do the trail by tales, you and I?"

"You're kidding, right?" Beatrix stared at him with her arms crossed.

Alwyn took a step closer to her, nearly standing in front of her. He raised his hand, turning it around as it gently touched her cheek, "True loves' kiss. I'd protect you. You'd never be harmed."

Beatrix didn't automatically grab his hand but she did, gripping his wrist as she glanced up at him. "Stop." She softly spoke while looking into his eyes.

Alwyn stared her in her eyes as she kept a hold of his hand. "Tell me, what did you see from the Wish Fish? I hear it lets you see your deepest desires, is that true?"

"I don't have to tell you anything." Beatrix gripped his hand harder as she roughly pulled it toward her, making him lean a bit closer. "What are you doing here, Alwyn? What angle are you playing at?"

Alwyn glanced at her hand, he twirled his hand as he now had a hold on her forearm. He pulled her toward himself, grabbing a hold of her body with his arm behind her back, "Why must I have an ulterior motive? I may be 'evil' but I like the world I live in." He stared down at her, "And the people in it. Why would I want to destroy that like any other villain?"

"I don't trust you." Beatrix had to grab his arms so she wouldn't fall, despite his hand keeping her up from falling.

Alwyn looked away from her, allowing her to stand normally. He took a step back away from her, looking up at the night sky. "You know, my mother was once queen. It was only briefly but she did it. Once? Twice?"

"Your mother was a cruel ruler." Beatrix was quick to tell him.

Alwyn snapped his neck to look at her, "And Uther wasn't? My mother had a right to the throne, and for that she took it. An opportunity was in the palms of her hand."

Beatrix had heard stories of his mother. It was a sad story but in the end, his mother was evil. "Are you trying to make me walk over to the dark side to join you?"

"No. But you'd look good doing it." Alwyn softly told her as he looked away from the night sky.

She quickly looked away from him, not wanting to fall for the evil one.

"You think I want to use you...?" Alwyn gently took a hold of her hand, lifting it up toward him, "I would very much rather make you my queen, not the other way around."

Alwyn softly rubbed her hand as he looked up at her in the eyes, "So, will you go to the ball with me?"

Beatrix was quiet as her daggered eyes softened. Her fingers even reacted, tugging on his hand. "Alwyn, you know I can't." She pulled her hand away as she turned around. "Why must you continue to make things so difficult for me?"

"Damn the consequences. It's not difficult, Beatrix. It's very simple." Alwyn took a few steps forward, standing behind her. He gently placed both his hands on the side of her stomach as he whispered near her ear, "Is there truly no changing your mind?"

Beatrix tensed at his touch but she didn't move away. She actually softened and relaxed from his touch as his arms wrapped around her into a hug. Her left hand held onto his arm that was over her as she leaned onto his hold. "You already know the answer. I can't."

She turned her head to look up at him. Then she quickly let go of him, getting out of his hold as she turned around, "I won't go to the ball with you. Evil is incapable of love. They only hate. It's a never, Alwyn." Her tone softened towards the end.

Alwyn glanced away from her, staring at the ground with his lazy eyes and straight face. "Very well." He had a look of disappointment but he didn't mind. "It was worth a try."

He looked up at the night sky, wondering how much time went by. "I want to see the library." Alwyn turned around to face the School of Good. He started walking towards the building.

"Alwyn." Beatrix took a step forward to him with genuine sympathy in her voice and eyes. "I'm not going to apologize for rejecting you but you know why-"

"I'm going to the library, with or without you," Alwyn spoke out.
