This world was one of ice and snow. Though, as legends told, it was once a beautiful land with flourishing fields of flowers and luscious rainforests of massive trees that housed thousands of little creatures who all lived in harmony.
This was the work of the twin gods of summer and winter. Among the rest of the gods, these two were the most significant. They were the only set of twins on Olympus – sons of the married pair of the primordial goddess, Hemera of day, and primordial god, Aether of light.
While the first-born son took after his grandparents on his mother's side – primordial goddess, Nyx of night, and primordial god, Erebus of darkness – with a cold and dark demeanor, as such a god of winter should have, the second-born son, god of summer, took after his parents with a bright and bubbly personality.
When they first came down onto Olympus, the Olympians had been in awe of the twins.
The god of winter was quiet and stoic with a cold aura. His hair was an icy silver, such as the colour of permafrost, and was styled in an undercut with a more natural black around the sides and the back. His features were sharp, like his eyes, which shone a blue like the waters of a frozen lake in the midst of a snowy winter, cold and peircing. His complexion was fair and pale as the winter sun, and his build muscular on a tall frame. The god of winter was usually calm, but he was quick to anger, and his rage could build like a blizzard in the night, powerful and unforgiving. He was usually seen wearing armour made from tree bark and furs with a crown of evergreen leaves settled on his head, and had taken the hand of the god of the hunt in marriage when he first came down to Olympus.
The second-born son was lively and bright in nature, such as his mantle of summer would allow one to assume. His hair was light and fluffy, colored a platinum-blonde like the first rays of the morning sun, and also styled in an undercut with the sides and back a rich earthy brown. His eyes shone with the warmth of the hearth of Olympus – his irises like a molten blaze of honey bathed in sunlight. A splay of freckles adorned his sun-kissed skin across the bridge of his nose and the apex of his shoulders, like the wildflowers in a vast field. His facial features were soft like the gentle clouds in the summer sky. His build was slender but well toned, and his height was only a few centimeters short of his brother's. He always wore short silken clothes that flowed in the wind with a crown made of the brightest sunflowers, and his hair was always braided in places where he'd allowed the mortal children to play. He was strong-willed and kind, no stray to laughter and slow to anger, but when his rage did boil it was as powerful and rare as a summer tempest.
Together, the twins kept the balance of the weather, and made sure that the world did not over-heat, nor freeze over. Though, some of the gods had other plans.
The god of summer was known for his beauty that rivaled that of the god of love and beauty himself, and was proposed to by many gods, including the king of the gods, lord of the sky. However, the god of summer turned down this offer to be queen of the gods, and instead lived as a virgin god for the time being, patiently waiting for the one who he'd happily give his heart to.
This left a bad taste in the lord of the sky's mouth, and he began searching for a way to take revenge on the god of summer, but the god of summer was well favored among the gods and the mortals that walked the earth at the foot of Mount Olympus.
The god of summer loved the mortals, and was well-known for his kind spirit and helpful nature. The lord of the sky hated this, as he believed that it was the god of summer's love of the mortals that deterred him from marrying the king of the gods and becoming his queen. So, when a mortal city favored by the god of summer forgot their offerings after the priest was caught in an accident, the lord of the sky planned something devious to get revenge for his rejection.
On one bright morning, the lord of the sky flew down on his chariot over the offending city. He created a massive storm that turned their wheat fields to frost, froze over the water in their wells, and covered their houses in ice and snow before he dissipated the storm to watch from the clouds.
Immediately, the god of summer arrived, worry evident in his gaze as he rushed around to ask the mortals what happened. A freak storm is what they'd said, and he instantly got to work, performing a miracle that only a god of his power could handle. He melted the frost and the ice in the wells and covering the houses, and regrew their crops even healthier than before.
Even though the god of summer had done exactly what he'd expected, the god of the sky was still enraged by his kindness towards the mortals, and called him to the throne room the next day.
And, so – even with the protests of the other gods who favored the god of summer – kneeling before the lord of the sky, the god of summer was sentenced to an eternity in the Underworld for helping the mortals after they'd been punished for their 'misdeeds'.
Just like that, the god of summer was never seen frolicking in the fields with the dryads, or playing with woodland creatures in the company of the god of the wild, or swimming at the beach with the nereids, or having tea with the goddess of the hearth, ever again.
But most of all, without the god of summer to keep the balance, the world was overtaken by winter, and it froze over, encapsulated with ice while the god of summer wept for his return to the surface world.
The mortals continued to pray to the god of summer, hoping that he'd come back to save them from eternal winter, but he was trapped in the Underworld for all of eternity, never to escape for the rest of his immortal life.
Legend has it that, if a mortal ever stumbled across one of the entrances to the Underworld, they would hear his eery singing as he walked the shores of the River Lethe, hoping to one day be forgotten so that he can finally fade from existence and sleep peacefully for the rest of eternity.
It was also said that, if his singing was ever heard by a mortal, it was a warning, for they were nearing their time where the god of death would pay them a visit.
