Micai pov

I kinda feel like Dad tricked me. He told me we would be going to grandmas house, but he didn't say for what. I guess to just hang out. Dad said dress comfortable. So I did. I can't shake the feeling he got us though. I guess I'll find out.

Grandmas drive way is full per usual. That means my cousins are here. I'm kinda excited to see Demrest. As soon as I got the door Adonis attacks my leg with hugs and kisses. I mumble an I love you too. Around the corner front door is none other than the famous Tyrene!

I run and hug her. It's been a while since she last was here. I hug her tight. He squeezes me. Demrest interrupts our hug with her aggressive entrance. Andre follows behind her fussing. "Demrest lose your attitude, before I help you!" She rolls her eyes. Ooo she's bold. We watch her throw herself on the couch. What could she possibly be mad about?

Lawrence looks at me. I look at Ty. She looks unamused. Andre leaves out the room. "Dem, stop acting like a toddler. We all here to clean the yard. I even came back from college to help. You're not the only one working." She huffed and ignored her.

Well, now I know the set up. Shortly after grandma came in the living room and asked us if we were ready. Nobody responded. The older men laughed. We separated us into groups. Me with Ty and Lawrence with Demrest. Both groups had a list of 3 task to get done. Then the left.

Ty and I got right to work, Demrest not so much. Ty and I watched as Lawrence tried his hardest, but clearly had no idea what he was doing. I guess physical labor is not a thing for him. He was trying though.

I used this time to catch Ty up on all that has happened. Starting with the smoking situation. She laughed at most of it, I did not. She caught me up on all the school stuff she's been doing. She seems like she's having a good time. Still doing a lot of partying. I could never.

Mid conversation, Lawrence runs over to me. "Micai your cousin is being mean! I know I'm not the best at this, but she has no right to talk to me any kind of way!" Ty put down her rake and walked over to Demrest. I stayed back and tried to offer words of comfort. From where I was standing, there seemed to be a heated argument between the two ladies. Is it bad I kinda wanna see them fight?

It looks like it might just escalate, but grandma comes outside. "You boys are doing a great job! Ladies! You all need to keep up!" I just knew Ty was going to tell her about Demrest behavior. She didn't. Actually both girls said a sweet yes ma'am and watched as she went into the house. Then it was back to business.

Ty stomps back over, clearly upset. She instructs Lawrence to work with us. So now it's us 3 working on our list and just Demrest by herself. Honestl, we're zooming through the list. When we finish, Demrest hasn't even made a dent. She's working hard and silent. I feel so bad.

I walk over to help her and she cuts her eyes at me. Rude, but okay. I pick up the weed cutter and start filing down the weeds. Between the machine and the sweat in my eye I don't see Demrest beside me. She falls forward. I turn off my machine and attempt to help her up. She slaps my hand away. Whatever. I lean over to pick up the machine again when I am pushed. I scrape my chin on the ground. Demrest laughs and says oops.

I pop up, ready to push her back. My fathers words play in my head. Telling me if ever put my hands on a girl, he'd fight me himself. I don't want to fight him. He's huge. I'd lose. I take a deep breath and turn around. Demrest just mad, I keep trying to tell myself. I continue to help her. My chin is stinging. I should go clean it.

Ty and Lawrence go to the other side of the house to finish some items on Demrest list. I don't why we helping her at this point. She ask me to grab the other side of a bag of gravel. We both grab a side of the bag. We start walking to the edge of the drive way. She is walking backwards. Now is my time. I walk fast towards her and I know she can't keep up. "Micai, slow down!" I don't listen. She stumbles and the bag of gravel gets the best of her. I watch her fall. The gravel lands on her leg. She screams out. I run.
