Part Five

Everything is on fire. My lungs, my legs, my arms, even my eyes are burning. I open my mouth but instead of air I'm filled with salty water and sand, I think. I spit everything out, trying to lift my body up but my arms are unable to support my weight.

I try to open my eyes, but my vision is very blurry. I squeeze my eyes shut but the blurry vision intensifies to pain. Sand, its definitely sand and now its in my eyes. I feel a rush of water race up my legs and over me, dosing me in salty water. I try to open my eyes to wash the sand out of them but its not very effective.

"Isla? ISLA!" a very familiar voice yells, piercing through my pounding head. I try to lift myself up again on my arms, but they crumble. I have no strength left; I can barely move my legs either.

"Oh my god, oh god." The voice gets closer until I feel arms pull me off the ground. "ALEX! Get help, quickly!"

I recognise the voice of my older brother, Jack. I sigh in relief. There's no need to be scared anymore, I'm in safe arms now.

.

.

"Isla, can you hear me?" a feminine voice asks me, a bright light bursting into my vision. I turn my head away from the light, but it follows me. "Isla, nod if you can hear me?"

I nod my head once, groaning from the over excursion. "That's good, that's good. My name is Mary, I'm a paramedic. I'm checking you over to make sure its safe to move you. Are you able to talk to me, Isla?"

I move my lips, but no sound comes out of my mouth. I can taste the sand in my mouth, the sand is down my throat too. I don't know if that is the specific reason sound won't leave my mouth or if it's something else. "That's okay, Isla, you're doing great. I'm just going to check your legs now."

I feel hands dig into my knees, the latex gloves sliding up to my hips pressing in before they go down to my ankles. "Any pain, Isla?"

I nod. Pain is everywhere. My lungs, my eyes, my stiff muscles. I just wish I could open my eyes and see properly. I want to see my family; I need them to know I'm okay. It was a rough day, but I made it out of the water alive.

Something I never thought I would do.

I thought I was done for. The previous series of events comes back to me in flashes. Falling from the boat into the water. I couldn't pull myself up to the surface for a minute but then I could. I remember nana telling me everything was going to be okay. I remember the worried look on her and Alex's face as they looked at me floating in the dark water.

I remember the moment I realised all my bad dreams were about to come true when I felt the hand grip my leg, getting ready to pull me under. Nana knew, I could see the look on her face when she screamed as I was pulled under.

I can't remember how I got away from the thing pulling me under. I don't even know where I am, I've washed up on a beach somewhere. It doesn't matter where just that my family has found me, and they know I'm safe.

I can only imagine how they've been feeling the past couple of hours thinking I'd drowned. I must've fought my way free and swam until I couldn't swim anymore. I'm very lucky to be alive.

.

.

A hand squeezes mine tightly, bringing me out a long darkness. I squint through my lids, my vision still murky as I adjust to the awfully bright light above me. "My name is Dr Allan; can you tell me your name?"

I turn my head towards the voice to my right. I can see another hand in mine. I follow the arm and look up at the tall brunette smiling down at me. "Hi there, can you tell me what your name is?" she asks again.
