Part Nineteen

"Do I get to meet him soon? I have to give him the best friend threat." Emily asks. She practically bouncing off the walls like a kid hopped up on sugar. I sit at my desk, watching her pace back and forth like a tennis match.

"The best friend threat?"

She nods. "Yes, the one I should've given to he who we shall not name."

I'm puzzled by her words for a moment until I realise, she's talking about my last relationship, the one I didn't even know I was in because I thought it was a one-night stand.

"That's not necessary." I tell her.

She frowns, finally pausing her pacing in front of my desk. "Oh, it's necessary. He's getting the special talk."

I'm slightly concerned by the evil look in her eye as she turns, continuing her pacing. I look to nana for help, she just shrugs. "I kind of agree with Emily on this."

"I'm not seeing him like that."

Emily scoffs. "You don't just dream about a guy like that for nothing. There is a reason."

I narrow my eyes and for a second wonder how she might now about the whole destined to be together thing. I wonder if I let that slip out, telling them that's what Austin told me, but I don't recall saying anything about that. Emily is making this assumption on her own and I don't like how close she's getting to the truth.

The whole destined to be together is going to be tonight's main topic when I meet up with Austin later. In approximately four hours and twenty-two minutes that is.

"It's not like that."

Emily snorts, giving me a look. "Be real, Isla. Dreaming about him means something. Perhaps it's a sign from the god's you are meant to be with him. I mean he is a merman after all, right?"

See? She's very close to the truth. I don't like it. I barely know anything about it and she's already jumping four steps ahead. What if I don't want to be with Austin? What if we aren't compatible? I just met him.

"Doesn't mean anything. He's answering my questions, that's all."

Emily grins. "Yeah, I bet he is."

I roll my eyes; she's not going to believe me no matter what I say at this point. "I won't be home for dinner tonight, I'm meeting up with Austin." I turn to nana, directing the conversation to her.

She raises a brow. "Hmm...why don't you just invite him over for dinner?"

I laugh. "Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. Not."

"Why not?"

Emily stops between us. "Yeah, why not?"

"Because Alex is not happy and I'm not ready to open that can of worms." I explain.

Emily frowns. "Alex isn't happy? What do you mean is he isn't happy?"

I sigh. "He found my drawing pad and confronted me this morning about the pictures I drew of Austin. He recognised him from The Mellow Mermaid, that's how I knew where to find him. Alex told me he wasn't happy and that I wasn't allowed to be going there."

"The Mellow Mermaid is not a safe bar." Nana comments.

"Why? Because its next to huge cliff side? It's a decent bar, some weirdos hang out there but it's not a bad place. Just needs a fence." Emily shrugs like it's not big deal.

Yeah, just needs a fence. I assume that is the reason I have a ban in place from my brothers to go there. Because its so dangerous.

"A fence would be a start. Back in my hay day that's where trouble hung out." Nana explains.
