Part Nine

Emily sits on the coffee table, a worried look on her face. "I'm so sorry, Isla, I wasn't thinking. I don't...we don't have to...I know it hasn't been very long..." she digs her fingernails into her knees, almost drawing blood.

I reach out, squeezing both her hands in mine and wait for her to look at me. "I'm ready, Emily. If I didn't feel ready, I would say no."

She nods, looking at nana beside me. "I wasn't thinking." She whispers.

Nana pats her leg. "It's okay, Emily. Perhaps we can all use the opportunity to ease our minds. I know I will be."

Nana gives me a small smile before she stands, excusing herself. Emily pulls her hands from mine, crushing her knuckles together. "I should check on mum."

I shake my head, looking through the window behind me. Mum has returned to the kitchen talking to nana now. "Nana is checking on her. I wanna show you something."

I stand up, offering her a hand. She nods, grabbing my hand. I haul her to her feet and pull her to bedroom. I shut the door behind her and guide her to sit on the bed.

"I found it in the water last night." I explain, opening the top drawer on my bedside table. I grab the silver cylinder piece I found in the ocean last night and hold it behind my back.

She raises a brow. "What is it? Worth something?"

"I don't know what it is, but it could be worth something. There's definitely more of it out there though." I hold the piece out for her to grab.

She frowns, holding it up to check it out. "What do you think it is?"

I shrug, sitting next to her on the bed. "Don't know, it looks like it broke off something though."

She gasps, her eyes wide as she turns to me. "It could be a sword handle! Oh, that would be so cool, we should look for some more. Can you imagine if we found something like that? And right off your beach too." She walks over to the window overlooking the beach where I found the piece.

I snort, bringing my leg up to my rest my chin on my knee. "I don't think it's a part of a sword, it's too smooth. Maybe a spear."

She turns to me, flipping the piece in her hands. "Could be from a spear. Do you have anything to do today? I could totally call dad and tell him I'm staying; we can spend the day diving off the beach."

I nod. "We can do that. "

She grins, clapping. "Yes! I'll call dad to let him know, I'm going to borrow a wetsuit." She hands me the silver piece and pulls her phone out, helping herself into my closet. I turn the piece over, checking it out from different angles again.

Maybe it is a part of a spear. I grip it tightly pretending to aim it like a spear. That would be cool if it was but how did a spear get in the ocean? One that looks well preserved. This piece has no wear and tear on it, no signs of sitting in the ocean for long periods of time. Maybe it was recently dropped in the ocean.

Maybe it's not even something cool like a spear and we're about to waste our day looking for more of nothing. I look at Emily smiling and talking to her dad on the phone, checking out my swimming gear. It wouldn't be a waste of our day; I'd get to spend the day with my bestie. I'm in need of a good dose of Emily.

Emily gives me the all-clear from her dad, saying she's going to stay the night. She heads out to tell my parents what's happening while I find something to wear. I trade my pyjamas for a bikini and pull on short wet suit. I open the door to my closet to find Emily sitting on my bed looking at a book.
