Part Twenty-Eight
"I mean...ah it's a very low chance, the nearest station for a royal guard is kilometres away. Almost a half days swim from here. And I don't see why anyone of them would do that for you...no offence, Isla." Mr Banks looks down at his shoes, frowning deeply before looking to his daughter for assistance.
"Maybe they know something about Isla's bloodline." Harley shrugs, unsure of herself.
Emily munches on her sandwich looking at all three of us separately. "But it's a possibility that that is what happened?" I ask.
"I mean...yeah, I guess so." Mr Banks runs a hand through his hair, letting out a heavy breath. "I'll try calling Amy, if anyone is going to know its her. I'll be right back." He gets up and leaves us, pulling his phone out of his pocket.
"Wait, Amy? That wouldn't be Amy as in Amy Jones, would it?" Emily leans forward, looking to Harley for an answer seeing as Mr Banks is gone.
Harley pulls a face. "Yeah, it is, why? She's dad's contact, she knows a lot of history about merfolk and humans. Do you know her?"
Emily laughs, clapping her hands. Does Emily know her? "Actually, I emailed her about the thing we found, I meant to tell you Isla, I got her info from nana. She's currently out of town visiting family, won't be back until the end of the month. She got back to me pretty quickly; told me she'd arrange a meeting with us as soon as she was back in town."
Harley nods. "You must've found something she's interested in. She loves her trinkets and treasures from the ocean, and land too I guess."
"Yes! I was heading in the right direction. My god, I'm good." Emily pumps her fist before reaching for another sandwich.
I shake my head. "That's good I guess; she'll be able to tell us what we actually found."
Mr Banks returns, propping his hands on his hips. "She's very interested in meeting you. Told me she was going to start doing research on your bloodline as soon as she can. I have your number now, so I'll relay any information either of us finds."
"Thank you so much, Mr Banks."
He smiles. "Please, call me Trevor. Mr Banks sounds like my father."
Trevor leaves to start his research, his enthusiasm to get to the bottom of my case a pleasing sign. I'm sure I'll have answers in no time. I wonder what he will find, what Amy Jones will find. I have no clue why someone in my family would decide to hide our merfolk genes from future generations. Surely it was for something very important, I hope it is anyway.
"Hey so is Amy a mermaid? Is she off visiting family in the ocean?" Emily asks.
Harley snorts. "Yes, she's originally from New Zealand so she's not far away."
Emily claps excited. "That's so cool. Ugh, I am both thrilled and annoyed I get to witness all these craziness. I wish I could turn into a mermaid." She pouts, reaching for another sandwich.
Harley sits up straight. "I can't turn you into a mermaid, but I can help you breath underwater for long periods of time. We could test it out Saturday."
I frown. "You can do that?"
Emily makes an excited noise. "You can do that?! oh my gosh, that would be so cool. Yes please."
"There's a type of seaweed you digest, if you can get pass the awful smell and taste, that will allow you to breath underwater for up to four hours. We use it to take half-bloods to certain areas to complete their rebirth ritual."
Emily grumbles. "Did you do that for yours?" I ask.
Harley nods, smiling. "Yeah, it was pretty disgusting."
